windows xp upgrade

Here's the deal. I have a bootlegged version of windows xp, so i finally decided to go with a legitimate version. The only problem is that I bought the upgrade version that was about $120 less. Now, for this upgrade version, you must have either windows 98se or windows me. This computer used to have windows me, but the disk broke when i tried to reformat, this is what led me to get the bootlegged copy of xp. I have bearshare, the file sharing program, a bit like napster, and i can download windows 98, with a cd key, but I haven't the slightest clue about installing windows 98 from a folder. I tried running the setup thing that was among the rest of the files, but it said i couldn't do it running the current version of windows (xp), and it says that I'll have to use ms-dos. I have NO CLUE as to what to do at this point. Does anybody have a simple solution to my problem? :dunno:

computer troubles

I have A Gateway :mad: and It is slow and stupid, so I've been trying to run the recovery. On the program, it says to click "restart" so I do, and it restarts, but nothing happens, It just goes to windows and sits there.
