Going to Vegas to see a dried up lake bed is no reason to go. You go to Vegas to 1. gamble, 2. see the shows, 3. gamble some more, 4. eat really good food, 5. gamble yet again, 6. see the "exotic" night clubs, and 7. gamble, gamble, GAMBLE!!!

A sceptic is right don`t go just to see area 51 you won`t see anything.

Remember it`s a secret military base so you won`t even go near it.

For cheap on Las Vegas Blvd., I like the old Excaliber. Not pretty, past its prime, but not bad. Or the Luxor, next door to the the Excaliber.

Swissy says he/she lives right at Vegas and probably knows more than me.

As far as I know, there is still only the little A'Le'Inn at Rachel, Nevada, close to Groom Lake and it is a mobile home motel run by the folks that have the bar, not even a motel building.

As a_skeptic pointed out. You wont see much, except maybe a M-16 pointed at your head.

I've sort of been through that area back in the 1980s. One thing, dont go between june and september. You being from England might make it 10 times worst. I have a hard time dealing with temps above 95-100. It gets around 120 degrees f or about 45c. If you're going to vegas, try and stay for at least 4 or 5 days and only dedicating maybe one day to Groom lake. It's still about 140 miles north (200 kl?) so its a good two hour drive. Also, Have fun finding the place. Its one of those place where the only point of reference is a mailbox along some side road. That road is private property before becoming Federal property.

But do it just for the pics. Dont go alone. Bring a cell phone that works in the US (You can buy one with 30 minutes for like 40 bucks). Bring a s-load of water and maybe some trail mix. Rent an off road if you can. If you have the money, just rent a pickup that can off road and a few ATV for you and your friends to cruise on. thats the best way to do it. Park your truck off the main highway and then ride your ATV's from there.

I also suggest visiting the Hoover Damn and travel the 100 miles from vegas to go see the Grand canyon and maybe take a mule ride down to the river.

The Desert is fun in the spring time. Watch out for pit vipers.

Oh sorry, No one really answered your question. In the 1990s, You could get a hotel room next to nothing. Now they charge full price. Just do one of those hotel.com deals. I could get a room for 50 bucks at the Ritz because my wife gets good deals. but only for family members. Also our inlaws work at a traveling agency.

But some broken down Motel 6 in the middle of the desert is about 60 bucks. or 30 quid. Is that considered cheap to you? If not, bring a tent. Why go to the desert and stay in a hotel? Just bring a tent and ruff it and watch the stars. I think that area of the US has to be one of the darkest in the nation. On a clear night you can see billions of stars. as long as you're far enough away from vegas.

Here's a response from someone who actually lived there...

There is no "cheap" in Vegas unless you are from L.A. The Strip is nice but expensive, but if you stay "downtown" you might not feel so safe.

Nellis is on the other side of town from the strip so tranportation will be an issue.

As far as running across something Paranormal, you won't find it at the base and if you do find it (elswere in the city) it won't be as fun as you think.

There was a guy who thought he was in telepathic communication with "things under the ground" but he was found (partially decomposed) in a storm drain near where I lived (by Lone mountain [nice part of town]). There is activity there, but it is mostly Bad. Take over your mind or murder you bad.

You will see UFO's though. Mostly I would see these streaks across the horizon (sort of like that Rod/UFO post). But those are just Military craft that can zip around by "normal" standards. I didn't see any traditional stuff, but I didn't look either.

Go for the gambling or live there to enjoy no state taxes (income/property). There are a lot of nature related site to enjoy. Go to Red Rocks, Lake Mead (where you can see like 10-15 feet under the water because it is so clear) or go for a longer drive to see a lot more.

I don't recomend going there to investigate anything unless you are strong. Like "fictionaly" strong, because remember that A51, S4 and Dulce (connected undergound) are some of the worst places.

Hope this helps.
