Man sues himself in court
From correspondents in Lodi, California
March 20, 2006

A Californian has taken the nation's litigation craze to a new level by effectively suing himself. Curtis Gokey was angry when a city-owned truck backed into his pick-up truck last month, causing $US3600 ($5000) of damage, so he filed a lawsuit demanding the city pick up the bill for repairs.

The city refused the claim, as Mr Gokey had been driving the offending truck.

'Some things are just ridiculous,' said the city's lawyer Steve Schwabauer.

'This is just one of those things where you go, no, the citizens of Lodi are not going to pay for his error,' he told San Joaquin's The Record.

Who's your granddaddy
From correspondents in Moscow
March 20, 2006

A 75-year-old grandfather has become the newest star of Russia's growing porn industry, after wandering on to a film set by mistake, thinking it was a muscle man show. David Bozdoganov has since starred in the films The Old Neighbour and Handyman at Work.

Director Alexander Plahov said: 'We were auditioning for a new film and had a number of couples on stage simulating sex when I saw an old guy standing at the back. I wandered over to ask him to leave when I saw this massive package straining against his trousers.

'I thought, now this could be an original idea. And I was right: all the movies we've made with David have been huge successes.'

The beast with two backs - and a walking stick. But not everyone is delighted. The priapic pensioner apparently believes in the beneficial powers of garlic and his female co-stars have complained about his habit of rubbing it on his genitals before filming action scenes.

Talk about a wild night near Seguin. A cow came flying out of its trailer, sent DPS and police scrambling, and left two police cars going up in flames.

"It was almost hard to believe," said Detective Sergeant Maureen Watson. She has been in law enforcement for 15 years, and says she "never had a day like this. I mean the best way to characterize this it, is it's bizarre. It's really really strange."

It's strange because it started out with a truck towing cattle, and ended in fire.

Watson told News 4 WOAI, "We believe the gate of the cattle trailer came open, and the cow, for lack of a better phrase spilled out onto the Interstate. It was pretty chaotic for a while."

Several cars hit some of the cows. One cow died. DPS troopers called for backup.

That's when one officer was nearly run down by a speeding truck, carrying two illegal immigrants inside.

Seguin Police were out looking for those illegal immigrants. They parked their cars in the hot grass, burning two of them including that brand new 2006 Crown Victoria. Watson said, "Well, all of a sudden, another officer who'd arrived on the scene, alerted the sergeant that there was a fire."

Everything inside was destroyed, including tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment designed for the patrol cars.

"You start off with kind of a bizarre accident with these cows spilling onto the interstate. That leads to other accidents, that leads to a car chase, that leads to a foot chase," Watson recalls.

The two mexican immigrants, ages 21 and 23, are in custody for illegally entering the country and evading arrest. Watson says they have replacement cars for now, but hope the city council will vote to get new cars soon.

O.k. you want bizarre here you go;

Man severs own penis, throws it at officers

March 17, 2006

BY ERIC HERMAN Staff Reporter Advertisement

Before cops threw the book at him, Jakub Fik threw something unusual at them -- his penis.

Fik, 33, cut off his own penis during a Northwest Side rampage Wednesday morning. When confronted by police, Fik hurled several knives and his severed organ at the officers, police said. Officers stunned him with a Taser and took him into custody.

"We took him out without any serious injury, with the exception of his own," said Chicago Police Sgt. Edward Dolan of the 16th District.

Doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital reattached Fik's penis Wednesday, sources said. He was listed in good condition Thursday, according to hospital spokesman Andrew Buchanan, who declined to comment further.

Smashing car windows

Fik, who lives in the 5400 block of W. Berenice, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal damage to property, said Officer Laura Kubiak. He told paramedics he was distraught over problems with his girlfriend in Poland, Dolan said.

Police arrived on Fik's block at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday after receiving reports he was smashing car windows, Dolan said. Fik then broke into a house down the block. A group of six or seven officers assembled in front of the house, Dolan said.

The occupants were not home, he added.

Fik was bleeding when the officers arrived and may have already cut off his organ, Dolan said.

"At that point, this guy came running out, naked, with a handful of knives . . . and started throwing knives at the police officers that were 10, 20, 30 feet away," Dolan said.

Fik threw his penis during the confrontation, too, Dolan said. He then went back into the house and re-emerged with "another handful of knives," Dolan said.

Dolan sneaked to the side of the bungalow's front steps and stunned Fik with the Taser. Fik fought back when officers went to restrain him, Dolan said.

"About 10 feet from the front porch, right on the sidewalk, was his penis," Dolan said.

Dr. Greg Bales, associate professor of urology at the University of Chicago, said severed penises are uncommon but surgery usually works.

"As long as the penis is placed on ice and reattached within a few hours, the success is usually pretty good," Bales said.

You got it, Rube!

Reminds of the story of the two teen boys in Los Angeles a few years ago who put half a stick of dynamite in a hornets' nest that was hanging just outside their parents' back door. They hornets' nest was destroyed and the two youths were, unfortunately, killed by flying shards of the door.

It is like the above incident in that I am guessing alcohol may have been involved.

Anything to screw down the tax depatment...

Tax rebel sends gnomes into safe hiding
March 22, 2006

A disabled council tax rebel in Britain has sent her collection of garden gnomes into hiding to avoid them being seized by local officials. The officials had threatened to take the gnomes from widow Gwynneth Lester in Fareham, about 112km southwest of London, after she refused to pay up.

Lester, 57, refuses to pay the tax which finances local services because, she says, she gets nothing for it. Her rebellion has landed her in court with a demand to pay up some £670 ($1620) – in cash or in kind – or face prison.

'Well, they won't be taking the garden gnomes now because I have given them away,' she said today.

'In fact they won't be getting anything that I have collected over the years because I have given it all away to keep it from them.'

A man with no arms has been caught speeding at 121 km/h (75 mph), according to police in New Zealand.
The driver, who used one foot to steer and another to operate the pedals, told officers he was born with no arms but had been driving for years.

The 32-year-old had passengers in the car when he was stopped on a highway near Papamoa in the Bay of Plenty area.

Police fined the unemployed man NZ$170 (£60) and banned him from driving, local media reported.

A local woman, when interviewed on the TV news said, yes, those stockings were the robber's mistake. Hose for woman are out of fashion, particularly fishnets, particularly in a seaside town like Monterey.

Fishnets trip up alleged robber in drag

March 24, 2006

MONTEREY, Calif. -- Authorities said a thief's getaway plan was foiled when the stockings he was wearing got caught in a car door.

An unshaven man wearing a black evening gown, fishnet stockings, calf-high boots and a black wig robbed a USA Gas station earlier this week, police alleged.

The armed man stuffed $290 in cash into an ensemble-matching black purse.

''I've been with the department for 22 years, and this is the first time I've heard of this happening anywhere here,'' Lt. Phil Penko said.

About 35 minutes after Monday's robbery, Officer Chad Ventimiglia spotted a black Saab with fishnet pantyhose hanging from the driver's door, dragging on the ground, investigators said.

The car was pulled over and Michael Leslie Clouse, 26, was arrested and booked for investigation of armed robbery.

WASHINGTON -- Commuters rushing for the train typically forget things in the car: keys, wallets, briefcases. But a baby daughter?

Police say that's what happened Thursday just north of Washington.

Jonathan Sander, 33, rode a subway train into the nation's capital before he realized he'd left his 7-month-old daughter in the car parked at a station in Maryland.

A Montgomery County, Md., police spokeswoman says Sander had a memory flash by the time he got to Washington and headed back to the station where he had parked.

He returned, but by that time commuters had spotted the baby in the car and firefighters had opened the locked door. The baby was taken to the hospital as a precaution and reunited with her mother.

Police said they think it was all a mistake and describe Sander as terrified and embarrassed.

"Child protective services was called. They're satisfied that this was a very unfortunate mistake on the part of one very embarrassed and frightened dad," Montgomery County police spokeswoman Lucille Bauer said

But they're still charging him with leaving a child under age 8 unattended. He could face a fine of up to $500 and 30 days in jail.

The cool weather may have prevented a tragedy, police said.

The infant was found unharmed, but if this had happened in July, the outcome could have been much worse.

"Obviously, this dad is going to suffer the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life," said Baur.

Investigators said Sander, who is not regularly responsible for his daughter's childcare arrangements, typically arrives at that Metro station at about 7 a.m., so they do not believe the baby was alone in the car for a long time before being discovered at 7:10 a.m.

Some good stories here... I love them... Some really weird things which can happen to people or are done by them...

Woman has grave 'stolen'
March 27, 2006

A German woman is threatening legal action after her grave was 'stolen' by one of her in-laws. Christa Jahn, 73, had bought a plot next to her husband, Hans, but was shocked to discover that her late husband's family had installed his Aunt Johanna in the grave.

Jahn said: When I went to lay fresh flowers on my beloved Hansi's grave, I saw in horror that the grave next to his, which I paid for with my own money, was taken by his aunt. I thought my heart would explode.

'Now I understand why Hans's family did not invite me to her funeral this January. It was an evil plot to snatch my grave. I now say to the Evangelical Church that runs the cemetery: Give me back my grave, or I will take legal action.'

Texas Mom Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity
By JULIA GLICK (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
April 07, 2006 9:58 AM EDT

McKINNEY, Texas - A woman accused of cutting off her 10-month-old daughter's arms and leaving the bleeding baby in her crib to die was found not guilty by reason of insanity at a retrial Friday.

Police had arrested Dena Schlosser in 2004 after finding her baby daughter Margaret near death and Schlosser, 38, covered in blood, holding a knife and listening to a hymn.

At her first trial, the jury deadlocked on the murder charge in February, with 10 of the 12 jurors saying she was legally insane. The deadlock forced a mistrial, and the two sides agreed last week to have Judge Chris Oldner decide the case.

Oldner issued the verdict a brief hearing Friday morning, and Schlosser is expected to be committed to a state mental hospital for treatment.

The case against her had hinged on whether Schlosser had severe mental problems that kept her from knowing her actions were wrong.

Defense attorneys told the judge last week that Schlosser had a brain tumor that could have caused hallucinations before the killing.

Several psychiatrists testified that Schlosser lost touch with reality, suffered severe mood swings and experienced religious hallucinations and delusions. One doctor said she told him she wanted to cut off her baby's arms and her own limbs and head and give them God.

The defense faulted Schlosser's husband for not getting her adequate mental health treatment and also blamed her preacher, Doyle Davidson, who believes only God can cure mental illness.

The state argued the defense was trying to deflect responsibility from Schlosser. Prosecutors presented a methodical case, focusing on possible inconsistencies and behaviors that might indicate she knew that killing her baby was wrong.

John Schlosser, her husband, has filed for divorce and has custody of the couple's two other daughters.

... I guess it was more than just PPD. And the preacher sounds like a nut, too. Geeez... just makes me worry about how many more F****d up people there are like that in world? Too many.

China Using Artificial Rain to Clear Dust

Beijing will use artificial rainmaking to clear the air after a choking dust storm coated China's capital and beyond with yellow grit, prompting a health warning to keep children indoors, state media said Tuesday. The huge storm blew dust far beyond China's borders, blanketing South Korea and reaching Tokyo.
The storm, reportedly the worst in at least five years, hit Beijing overnight Sunday, turning the sky yellow and forcing residents to dust off and hose down cars and buildings. Hospitals reported a jump in cases of breathing problems, state television said.

The government was preparing to seed clouds to make rain to clear the air, state TV said, citing the Central Meteorological Bureau. It did not elaborate, and the bureau refused to release more information.

Storms carrying chalky dust from the north China plain hit Beijing every spring, but newspapers said this week's was the heaviest since at least 2001. The Beijing Daily Messenger said 300,000 tons of sand and dust were dumped on the city Monday. ...

A US woman who won $1m (£536,000) in the New York state lottery four years ago has beaten the odds by winning another $1m lottery jackpot.

Valerie Wilson scooped her second $1m prize on a lottery scratch card.

Experts say that the chances of her winning both games were an incredible 1 in 3,669,120,000,000.
