Hi all

Sometimes when I watch videos in windows media player I get a message saying the video could not be played, I look into the problem and I am told I need to download Codec’s, I download them and nothing changes. The Microsoft site gives me the least help on the matter. I like Windows media player the best as a whole, except for this stupid problem that seems to happen to other people too. Does anyone know how I can completely update my windows media player so it plays all files? I would have thought Microsoft would automatically add all the Codec’s to there updates and new versions, but Microsoft being Microsoft they don't.

I have updated my WMP regularly, but still doesn’t play some movie files.

Also where should you download the Codec’s too?

Can anyone help?

Hum, that's a tricky one, usually after downloading the codec, the file will play... have you tried downloading the file again after you get the codec?

Hi thanks for the reply.

Yes I have tried it, I was wondering if I was downloading the Codec to the wrong place?

Well, on my old pc, my codecs used to placed in a folder in the "program files" section of my main harddrive, but since purchasing a new pc, I have not had to download any codecs.

Faeden, let me send an email to my buddy, she knows a hell of alot more about such things that I do...

Thanks mate smile.gif I will be surprised if it can be fixed, this is one of these problems I just feel in my gut is unfixable, and no matter what I do the same problem will keep happening

Hey Faeden, first, I would say upgrade your media player to 11 which was released recently (if you haven't already done so). If the codec is still shown as missing, you may just need to re-install the codec.

Number 11 is only in Beta. I just downloaded it and it is a dreadful step backwards, I preferred 10.

Download winamp, it is much better than media and has fewer codec problems.

go into the tools -> options -> player and ensure download codecs automatically is checked, then also select daily (radio button) above. Reboot your pc.

If this doesn't work, go to: https://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...ecdownload.aspx

Should be able to get the codecs you need there.

Still stuck?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme.../faq/codec.mspx

Hope this helps
