I don't follow manuals well. I downloaded Kubutu(sp) and it installed all great but I dont know how to install Mozilla or anything. I was reading you go into root directory and type sudo apt-get install x
I get messages like "File is locked wont install". yada yada. What am I doing wrong? Linux looks pretty cool and has alot of free media stuff I could use on my laptop. Everything is free. can someone tell me what Im doing wrong? I dont understand the concept of it, but Im running the gui version of it. Please understand Im new and so if you start throwing words or names of what to use, I wont understand unless you break it down. thanks:alien: |

ok. ill try that tomorrow. Now no matter what version of linux I try to install (like 3 of them) it says "OS not found" or some lame shit. I heard this is mainly a HP or HP desktop issue. Someone told me that when I installed Partitian magic before deleting windows (Which I had to do because linux didnt want to install on a partitian) That Partician magic is the program thats still hidden that is causing the lock files. I asked that person to help me and he told me I was on my own. Sometimes those people in IRC are helpful then just walk away from you in the middle of a problem. i have never done that to anyone. Unless they cant get it right. Not the case for me.

PS the OS not found just happened like 2 hours ago. it installed fine at first, then I tried to reinstall another version and it crapped out on me.

one more thing, My kid never uses her computer we got her (we got her sister one last year). Its new but it was fairly cheap. Its a AMD 64bit with duel layer burner. I am making payments on a Dell that plays games ok and works well on the internet (which is all she does). I'm thinking of trading my new computer for hers. Mine is a P4 with HT technology but not a duel core. Its just a basic P4. Do you think her AMD is better at rendering 3D art? if so, i plan on trading, otherwise its a waste of computer. And she told me she didnt mind. She likes the way my computer looks and how quiet it is.

Because it is 64 bit compared to 32 bit yes, as long as it has enough memory. But HT basicly ammounts to the same thing as dual core. As for how long it will take to render that would depend on the processor speed.

I have a new problem now. I reinstalled linux. This time unbuntu. I used paul as the user name. it says paul login:? I put paul and it asks password which I put in. I reinstalled it twice because I thought i typed in a wrong password (twice) and got it wrong. So I know 100% without a doubt, my password is correct and the name is the name it asks me to login. There was no other login options. I'm getting frustrated with this thing.

I have never heard of that before. you could try installing fedora core, its considered an easy to use (and install) distro.
Are you logging in at the graphical login? If you are once you get there press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and where it says 'login:' type your username then press enter then type your password. |

No its the text login or what looks like DOS. Thats my problem. When you first install it, it says "unbuntu" as the systems name. I changed it to my first name. OK, it never asks for a users name. I think the order of installation went like this.
System name : unbuntu_ _ _ _ <-- a prompt to allow you to change the name. So I changed it to paul. Then it asks if you want to set up a proxy, I left it alone as an option. Then it installs a bunch of junk, then about 30 minutes later, it prompts you to type in a password and repeate password (to make sure you typed it in right) to use at a later time. There is never a time when it asks me to create a name. I thought by changing unbuntu to paul, that it was my users name. But its not. Because when you finish installing, it says paul login?: and so I type paul (all lower cases) Passord: I type in my password (all lower cases) then it pauses and asks again and again. I tried everything from leaving it blank and hitting enter, to typing paul (again) to "new user" and the password afterwards. And as I stated, I wasnt sure if I screwed up the password or missed it asking for a name the first time, so I spent nearly another hour reinstalling it. The only time it asks for a name change is when it says unbuntu. And i know I used all lower cases. It states on the website, not to type in upper case. And yes, i even tried a combination of upper case and first letter upper case and nothing is working. Is there a default user name when starting off? |

ok.. I guess ill reinstall the kunbuntu again and try your command line. If it doesnt work, i will then try that fefora. but, I wanted a nice package. unbuntu is geared for media. kunbuntu is unbuntu but for movie editing and photoshop like software along with office bundles and other related stuff. But I guess because java and flash are security risks, they used another web browser that doesnt allow flash or java to be installed. I want security, but there are times when I might want to use flash or java. At least with firefox, i can turn it on and off. But, kunbuntu doesnt seem to let me install it for some goofy reason. Even though the setup package comes with it.

I just installed xubuntu a day ago and it asked for a username so it may just be the build of kubuntu thats acting wierd.
Try installing Xubuntu (it uses xfce a lighterweight window manager) then install KDE. Although you can get all the same software without using KDE (I think its a horrible Window manager, i use Ion myself). you can get firefox for it but I would suggest Opera because its faster and more secure. There should be a guide on the ubuntu wiki to installing flash and Truthfully though, I would not suggest giving up on Linux, I went through some of the same troubles when installing for the first time (I went through about 6 distros before finding one that worked), but after your first install it all goes uphill from there. |

OK, now I installed kubuntu. And it loads fine, right. But when I use that apt or adept software to install things, it tells me file locked or bad file. I tried usingt those text commands in the shell, but its not working. I know i have the i386 version (the laptop manual on google said to use it) I even tried the x86 (or whatever its called) and it wouldnt even install. I redownloaded the iso file and reburned it and its doing the same thing. I even burned it from another source. Its a pain in the butt to remove stuff and reinstall and reformat the Hard drive. If you dont mind, Ill try and take desktop shots, you can tell me what to do or dont do. If you have the time. The one thing I can do on Kubuntu is use irc and the internet. At least i have those features.
so I can upload desktop snaps to my website. I'll probably do it in the next few days. thanks for helping. (ThePredator;283405) I just installed xubuntu a day ago and it asked for a username so it may just be the build of kubuntu thats acting wierd.

Trog: Before you install Linux, when formatting your hard drive, you may have partitions that need to be removed..so use FDISK (Dos) to remove any secondary drive partitions you may have, and create a Primary Drive and MBR (Master Boot Record)...once all this is done, then try to install Linux..let me know how that turns out. |

Synaptic comes with it, its located at /usr/sbin/synaptic, but if you run "sudo synaptic" at a shell it should come up.
Web_Majick, Unbuntu and its direvetives will not let login as root or su until you change it to allow you to, since ubuntu is generally geared towards new users they don't want them accidently doing rm -fr / (I did that shortly after first setting up linux )
