I want to wish all couples a great day tomorrow! To increase your chances, there is still time to go out and get that special gift that says 'I Love You.' Do you remember the line in the movie Love Story, "Love means never having to say I'm sorry?" My saying would be; "Love means never having to say 'I love you;'" because your actions should always speak louder than your words. When your actions are doing a good job it should not be necessary to interrupt.
I made a few notes from watching a 1993 episode of ABC Primetime report about love. It spoke of the feelings of euphoria that accompanies the infatuation stage of falling in love. It stated that these feelings are caused by a release of Dopamine, Norepinephrine and Phenylethylamine or P.E.A. for short. The program went on to ask, 'How long does this chemical rush last?' Perhaps more importantly; Why? The research that has been conducted indicates that these feelings last about four years and that four years is the approximate time when most marriages begin to break up. The researchers theorize that the chemical release of P.E.A. drugs during courtship is a result of Evolution. It is theorized that early humans initially seperated after coitus to go their seperate ways. That changed when humans began to walk upright. This created a problem for females who were used to carrying their babies on their back. Now, with their hands full, women needed a companion for protection and to help gather food until the child was old enough to stand on its own. So, in order for two people to stay together, (the theory goes) the brain started to create chemicals to spark an attraction that would last long enough for the baby to be able to walk/run on their own. The urgency of passion calms as the brain starts to become immune to those amphetimine-like substances produced in the early stages of love. Now it begins to manufacture yet another chemical: endorphins. These natural substances give you intense feelings of comfortable pleasure; a morphine-like high similar to what long distance runners experience. For some, this narcotic is not quite enough. Couples may grow restless and split up seeking that initial rush of amphetimines once again with somebody new. This is especially true if you are dealing with someone who has problems coping with addictions. Why do some marriages make it past that four year itch? A lot has to do with fundamental compatibility. Our unconscious 'love map' tells us when someone triggers a sense of familiarity even when they seem superficially different. That's why many end up marrying someone like Mom or Dad. Scientific studies may confirm what our mothers always told us; relationships work best when two people like each other as much as they love each other. So, whether you are newly in love or old familiar friends, may you have the best Valentines Day ever! ________________________ 'True friendship is one Soul in two bodies.' |
