Yes, but I've found that doesn't neccessarily mean anything. Sometimes it can be attributed to a temporary chemical imbalance in the brain.

I have felt this way for the last few years.

I can not put my finger on exactly what it is, if it is a shift in the world physically, mentally, or spiritually. Or whether it is my own fear that something might happen that brings on a sense of impending change.

I’ve been feeling the ‘essence of doom’ for years now! 911... Iraq War... Tsunamis... Hurricanes... Floods... Bird Flu... Tornados... EarthQuakes... Global Warming... Famine... Tens of Millions Malnutritioned/Starving Children annnnd My Mom just got out of ICU/rehab and not thinking straight (I had to hide her car keys and she is maaaaad… “I can drive!" she decries as she wobbles around her house with a pain in her side…Weak as a kitten but burnin’ with a fire…:) )
Feeling a sensation of impending doom? O yeah-Most every year so it seems…Like I'm livin' inna nightmare dream... rolleyes.gif ~rore

Yeah, sometimes. You can trust it at times, but at others, it seems nonsensical. Quite a bit of research has been done on it, and it's related to anxiety & other associated disorders.

I'm not saying, however, that ALL of these feelings are an anxiety disorder, far from it. I'm just pointing out that anxiety CAN be the main factor. Many times it can also be a good warning. Those impressions of impending negative outcomes are sometimes based on, I think, our subconcious telling us of something we've noticed, but were too busy to be aware of in our everyday travels. For example: I had absolutely horrible dreams the night before 9/11. I (almost) never remember dreams, or having them at all, but this dream was so powerful, that I not only remembered it, but wrote down some of the relevant sequences of the dream. In my own mind, at least, the dream tied in very heavily with the 9/11 attacks.

I think the generalized anxiety that produces this 'feeling of doom' may be a collective response to global events...sort of a collective involuntary 'flight or fight' reaction...usually though, flight or fight reactions are meant to warn one of very real...not imagined...impending danger.

Rore...do you see a correlation between the increase in generalized anxiety disorders (as well as other similar disorders) and an increase in the public knowledge of global events? If so, what potential long-term health problems do you foresee as a result of the increased stress? Doesn't a sustained state of 'flight or fight' has grave consequences on our health?

Tutu posts: Doesn't a sustained state of 'flight or fight' has grave consequences on our health?

Yes it does!!! The below article is in reference to earthquake survivors. Any threat to one’s life will evoke the same responses in most Humans…

“At the time of an earthquake anyone can experience stress. This response of
survivors is automatic and occur as a reflex on involuntary basis.

Understanding Normal Stress Responses
Fight or Flight Response:
Humans have a natural stress response. The stress response is called “fight or
flight.”
1. A threat or potential threat is perceived:
There is some perception of a threat to safety or potential threat. For
example:
a. Driving in traffic
b. Conflict at work or home
c. Exam or test
d. Job interview
2. Body responds by mobilizing energy and resources so we can respond quickly:
Hearts beats faster and stronger
Breathing is fast and shallow
Feeling of tension in the arms and legs along with sweating.
Dryness of mouth and heightened Perceptions
3. Threat is dealt with or avoided (coping):
Once we have this “emergency” boost, we can deal with the threat.
We might fight the threat or we might run away (flight) or we might
find some other way to cope.
4. Body returns to relaxed condition:
Once the threat has been removed, the body returns to its relaxed condition

In a disaster, steps 3 and 4 may not occur! Aftershocks and difficult
conditions of living are resulting in a situation of sustained threat perception and fear, leading to distress.

Mental Health Module for Psychosocial Care Givers

Differentiation Between Stress and Distress
5. If the body responses do not return back to the usual level of functioning it can lead onto distress. This could manifest itself as experiencing for prolonged period of time as well as with increased intensity symptoms of normal stress response.
This can also result in the following responses:
Physical, Psychological, Social
Headaches,
Muscular
Pains/aches,
Tremors of Hands
Impaired concentration & decision-making, and poor attention. (ADHD/ADD)
Social withdrawal
Palpitation Forgetfulness Inability to perform day to day
tasks
Cold sweating
Irritability Increased Conflict with family or community members
Tiredness
Worrying, Sadness or Crying and Loss of pleasure from regular activities
Inability/difficulty in going back to work, school etc
Sleep disturbance Fearfulness, tendency towards depression.
Misuse of Medicines or substances of abuse(smoking, addiction etc)
Decreased appetite Anger
Gastrointestinal Problems
Guilt/Survivor Shame, anxiety
Lack of interest in social life.
Persistent pain without any apparent cause or in excess of what is warranted by
the injury
Recurrent thoughts/memories about the disaster…

As a result, ability to cope and general functioning is greatly compromised. Those who participate in rescue work are also at risk of this response. However, those who experience the disaster first hand and suffer losses directly are more likely to experience such distress. The most common response however is resiliency.

In most of the people having some of the reactions listed above these will diminish in intensity over time without of the need for professional help, but if they persist, professional help may be needed. TIME is a great healer. Support from family and a friend is critical.

If person has impaired concentration, fatigue, irritability, crying, worrying, on several days for more than two weeks, this is a disorder not just distress! It is distress if you have only one or two of the above symptoms.

But if you have four or more of above symptoms then it is a disorder.”

I’ve been working this angle for almost a decade now but it still does not seem to evoke much serious consideration in the US Medical World in general and right now I’m too involved with my Mom’s and Dad’s health issues (Dad died a while back and Mom’s time is coming quickly) to give the matter much attention at the moment…priorities.

I also think there is a correlation to this medical anomaly and the playing of violent video games because the key words to me are ‘perceived threat’ and these video games do get one extremely involved in life and death scenarios regardless of whether or not one is ‘just playing a game’.
More to it than that, but the above is just the ’tip of the iceberg’ imho… ~rore
