Havent seen one of these for a while.. just a single intense bright light. no flashing lights like a plane has and it was silent.

What time of day was it and what direction were you facing?

It was taken exactly at 19:07:17 on 17/10/2007 and came from the west and traveled overhead towards east.
ive seen 3 of these pass over on the same night once before and each one came in from a diferent direction. i was seeing them often some months back but they kinda stop showing up. they just appear some staying bright and others just start to fade away as soon as you see them.. i followed a few with binos. they just shrink to a tiny spec like a star and carrying on moving across. Strange whatever it is |

The video looks like a satellite. Your description sounds like a description of the appearance of satellites as well. You can use the heavens-above.com website to find information on upcoming overhead passes of satellites and can compare this with what you are seeing in the sky.

I thought it might have been an iridium flare "low orbit satellite" but reading here http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap980402.html it says that the glare typically lasts for around 10-20 seconds. the one i see lasted well over 2 minutes and one of the first ones i filmed lasted even longer at 3:40 seconds.
so depending if that goes for all other satellites and orbiting objects. which i would imagine then im not so sure it is a that. im not even sure if the flare from a iridium satellite is the same as what i see. all photo's of flares ive seen seem to have long exposure times set. another possibility it can be is a high flying plane for some unkown reason shining a high powered light.. it does look more like a spotlight than a flare from a object created by sunlight. just gotta look at the way sunlight shines on a plane to get some idea to what it would be like.. the light does match another unusual object ive seen that just flashes 2 bright lights.. i see one with bino's and i could just makeout a craft of some sort.. but looked to fat to be a plane.. one light flashes at the front and the other right on the back. ive had a couple of times where ive seen one of those single white light show up.. then one of these strange flashing crafts would show up.. heres a pic of the 2 flashing lights. the object was moving forward and traveling away http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k205/BuzZz777/2Flash.jpg heres the single light http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k205/Buz...iteLightPic.jpg odd stuff i know when something isnt just your ordinary aircraft.. been looking at them enough times.. its just odd but i havent a clue... need a expert who knows these things

Iridium flares are only shortlived, that is correct. But the general behaviour of satellites is quite different. After the Iridium satellite has been seen to "flare up" it will still remain faintly visible, appearing like a moving star. A satellite usually appears at a more or less constant brightness as it traverses the sky above and is visible for many minutes. Sometimes they noticeably fade and go out above the horizon as they disappear into the penumbra of the earth's shadow (their source of brightness is reflected sunlight, which is why they are normally visible in the darkness following sunset or preceding sunrise). Rarely, but it sometimes is visible, they will pulse in brightness as the object is rotating and it has a different inherent brightness depending upon which side is facing the sun. I have been observing satellites for many years and it is expected upon any evening to see several, even if one is not specifically looking for them. You cannot help it if you are looking up.
I recommend that you go to the www.heavens-above.com website, enter in the decimal coordinates for your location, or the nearest town if you do not know them, and print out a forecast of expected passes. Look for the lower magnitude ones in particular (those are the brightest) and step out at the right time with an accurately set watch to observe their passage. Look for one that reaches a high altitude (that is, pass high above the horizon) and note the time of its reaching its highest altitude. Note the direction it is expected to come from and the direction it will leave and the respective times. You can also print out a track of its motion against the stars which you can refer to. Then compare its behaviour with that of what you have been seeing and filming. |

I'm sure this is an old thread so apologies for dragging it up again, especially as I'm a new member, but I happened across this thread by doing a google search for " "single white light" silent ufo " " after seeing what is basically what has been filmed by the originator of this thread. Interestingly I first saw this silent white light two days ago (approx midnight on 21st July 2008). It was travelling from east to west and I had a visual of the object for about 30 seconds until it faded from view. I spent quite a while looking out for it last night but due to cloud cover, I was unsuccessful. I mentioned my observation to my parents over the dinner table this evening and coming home from visting friends later in the evening was shocked to discover that my parents had witnessed this 'silent white light' themselves whilst entertaining a family friend. I immediately went outside upon arriving home and after a short while sure enough I saw the light at approx. 1140hrs. i would have probably thought I was going crazy had I not called out my mother who also witnessed again this strange silent white light. It travels across the sky at about the same speed as a passing commercial aircraft, the only differentiating features being its silence and the fact that the light is solid and does not blink as you would expect an aircraft to do so. Eventually it fades from view. Maybe it could be explained as a passing satelite but the fact that it has been seen on three separate occasions, twice in one evening suggests otherwise. I feel I may have to spend more time looking out for this phenomenon.

I got a couple more white lights.. these are the brighter ones ive seen.. ive seen many more but they are either very faint or fade away not long after you see one.. i use starry night to check up on satellites and
none of the lights ive seen are shown to be satellites passing over.. and what satellites the software shows are to be passing over i dont see at all.. not visible without bino's.. im still baffled to what these thing actually are.. ive also been seeing a light that flashes. like one to four flashes kinda like a camera flash. when i see one last i grabbed my bino's and spotted a faint pulsing star like object moving across. http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...WhiteLight3.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...nt=ReqLight.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...rent=Light1.flv theres certainly something strange going on up there.. during the day when the weather has been good im always seeing something.. but most of what i see are to high to film. and what i have got just isnt close enough.. still better than seeing nothing come on people.. get your eye to the sky.. look for high altitude objects. you cant see them without bino's. http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...=GlowThing2.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...ThingCloser.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...teThingFade.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...ThingFade2b.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...rent=Tumble.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...ent=Tumble2.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...WhiteThing6.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...WhiteThing3.flv http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...WhiteThing1.flv |

What wonderful videos! Them are some impressive stunts that craft can do!
However, one must wonder. With all that technology they have, why do they have a big ass light on their aircraft? Obviously, they want to be seen? This post has been edited by Alitalia: Jul 22 2008, 10:05 PM |

those white lights, not convinced they are anything out of the ordinary.focus your camera on a star and move the camera about,it gives the impression of movement, even a little camera shake can give that effect.

So your saying macdaddy that this light traveling and falling down into the distance is just a trick of the
camera with that of just an ordinary star.. maybe you missed that bit.. i know it isnt to exciting to watch but it does help if you watch it all.. http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/Co...ightFalling.flv |

Im convinced now that these bright lights are satellites.. and that of the ISS and the recently launched
supply ship ATV- (Jules vernes) which also tags along behind the ISS.. if its a clear sky tonight(Sunday) at around 22:37 london "GMT" time the two will make another pass.. look to the west and they will be coming up out on the horizon and will pass close to a nearby bright star (Arcturus) |
