I really love Space Odyssey 2001. The book is really my favorite Arthur C. Clarke has such a way of really putting into scientific and technical terms ways of actually putting forth the technology necessary to do what is done in his writing. The way he explains things (and in the movie the way things are depicted), it almost seems as if it would HAVE to work. And since he's such a smart guy they probably actually would.
