I would love to listen to more classical music, but it is daunting if you were weaned on Led Zep, Pink Floyd and Tomita. I often hear something I like but usually don't know what I am listening to. I am thinking that to fully appreciate it, you would need to start at some beginning, and understand the history of what you are listening to, and the order that the music arrived in history and so on. This is how we get an appreciation of other stuff. But it is a daunting task to wade through a couple of hundred years of classical music, knowing what is worth listening to, and what is not.

Quite true Dundee.
The world of classical music is large, daunting, and confusing, even for musicophiles. What I intend to do here, is not to write a book, just to give you the most widely-known classical pieces, and if you happen to find something you like, to give you the feeling of wanting to know more. If I manage to do that, I would be happy. To sum up, I just want to share my passion for classical music, that’s all... Any help is most welcome

The Trio No. 2 in E-flat major for piano, violin, and violoncello, D. 929, was one of the last compositions completed by Franz Schubert, dated November 1827. It contains four movements, the second of them (the Andante con moto) appeared in the soundtrack of the film Barry Lyndon directed by Stanley Kubrick.

L'Étude Op.10 No.3 in E major is a solo piano work composed by Frédéric Chopin. This is a slow cantabile study, in which the right hand must maintain a singing tone in the melody whilst contributing to the accompaniment.

The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 "Choral" is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Completed in 1824, the Ninth Symphony is one of the best known works of the Western repertoire, considered both an icon and a forefather of Romantic music, and one of Beethoven's greatest masterpieces. In the last movement, it incorporates part of the Ode an die Freude ("Ode to Joy"), a poem by Friedrich Schiller.

Dies Iræ: The hymn ascribed to Thomas of Celano contains 18 rhymed stanzas (17 tercets, 1 quatrain), to which a later, anonymous writer added an unrhymed couplet, ending in Amen.
The impressive plainsong melody to which the hymn was sung was used by composers of religious works from the 16th century onward, either in its original form or as the basis of a polyphonic composition. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Giuseppi Verdi were among the composers of religious works who wrote original music on the text of the hymn. Mozart included it in his Requiem Mass in D minor (KV 626), a piece he composed in 1721; here it is: Dies Iræ -------------------- Eigentlich weiß man nur, wie wenig man weiß. Mit dem Wissen wächst der Zweifel. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
