Great answer, Liz.
Master Vic, sorry to disagree with you but I'm afraid you're wrong on all three counts. 1) The Mayans did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012. That is a gross mistranslation and a complete misunderstanding of the calendar. 2012 is the end of a great cycle. Nothing more. They made the calendar a long time ago, and doubtless they thought they'd make a new by now. They didn't. It happens. 2) Nostradamus almost never used dates and he NEVER gave an end-of-the-world date. 3) Scientists cannot predict that a meteor will or will not strike the Earth until less than an HOUR before impact. They can tell how many near-misses we'll have, but not how many will be snared by Earth's gravity. Wrong, wrong, wrong ... sorry, but, wrong. -------------------- I'm trying not to be a drama queen today.

Let us ignore the facts of the matter and just pretend for the moment that the Mayans actually did make a prediction that the world would end in the year we will call 2012. Assuming this, why would any rational human be at all worried by it? After all, the Mayans had no power to predict such events centuries into the future.

Yes, and THIS calendar:
http://www.calendarhome.com/tyc/tyc.pdf Ends in the year 10,098 and it was made more recently than the Mayan calendar! They could have made it last indefinitely, but they didn't. Why? It MUST mean the world is going to END on THAT DATE! OMG! C'mon ... don't sneer, this is the same logic we're using on the Mayan calendar and IT'S WRONG! -------------------- I'm trying not to be a drama queen today.

Because ... the Mayans were NOT predicting the end of the world on that date. Nowhere in Mayan studies, nor in Mayan religion, does it state that it would be the end of the world, nor is there any prediction of catastrophe of any kind. It is merely the end of a great cycle, not unlike how your annual calendar ends December 31. They merely did not make a calendar for the NEXT cycle. That's it. End of story. If you can prove me wrong (and not merely a statement from some Doomsday Website where Scientist X says "The Maya predicted the End of the World"), great. Otherwise ... I stand by what I said. To my knowledge the Maya did not predict the end of the world.

No, you are correct, Kirin...the Mayan calendar (there are many actually) plotted the course of the five separate ages of existence..with the advent of the 5th corresponding to 2012..it will last 26,000 years and then cycle back to the 1st..in astrological terms, its the infamous 'Age of Aquarius'

QUOTE Quotation: "About the time of the end, a body of men will be raised up who will turn their attention to the prophecies, and insist upon their literal interpretation, in the midst of much clamour and opposition." Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727 CE) 1 "The prophecies are to be unintelligible to the ungodly but intelligible to those who are properly instructed." Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662 CE) 2 "The Earth is degenerating today. Bribery and corruption abound. Children no longer obey their parents, every man wants to write a book, and it is evident that the end of the world is fast approaching." Allegedly this came from an Assyrian tablet, c. 2800 BCE. However I seem to recall that an almost identical message was said to have appeared as graffiti on a wall in Pompeii. "Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia." Charles Schultz, creator of the Peanuts comic strip. 4 And it continues, the fear of the end. |
