Dr Douglas Vakoch of the SETI Institute, which has been leading the search for extraterrestrials, told New Scientist magazine: "Before sending out even symbolic messages, we need an open discussion about the potential risks." They voiced fears that advertising humanity's place in the universe - as happened last week when Nasa broadcast a Beatles track towards the North Star - could attract the attention of aliens who are less friendly than ET. I doubt extraterrestrials will be able to interpret what we send them (other than images) - so how do we know that it's safe sending out pulsating messages or songs?

I have always believed that music is a univeral language. I dont know of any species that doesnt like some kind of music. Theres a saying that music can tame the savage beast. Maybe its true of aliens also. Couldnt hurt!

True.. But signals from the TV and radio are sent out into space 24/7, and it has been this way for decades. It takes one hundred million years for these signals to reach other galaxies.. So, who knows.. Maybe they haven't heard from us yet.. Maybe they've sent signals to us but we haven't received them yet.

Beaming songs can't hurt... unless they are really bad songs ans we don't stop beaming them... in which case the "neighbors" could come and make us turn it off!
