check this out. $11 million created this. The future looks like it may hold some real AT-AT's. Looks like we have surpassed the japanese robot that can't quite walk up some stairs stage. I wonder how long the military will take to decide it could become an effective killing weapon and buy it, rather than adapt it for positive uses around the home

Archa posts: I wonder how long the military will take to decide it could become an effective killing weapon and buy it
======================= According to this blurb, DARPA (U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) did fund the project… Nice Find Archa! ~rore “Boston Dynamics is a small engineering and robotics design company best known for the development of BigDog, a quadreped robot designed for the U.S. military with funding from DARPA…” More @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Dynamics This post has been edited by rorechof: Mar 17 2008, 06:16 PM -------------------- Peace&Love~rore

I am impressed by its very realistic movements. I kind of felt bad when they kicked it, it was like kicking a horse, especially the way it rebalenced itself. It was like it was a real living thing

It was like it was a real living thing Now that is spooky, I had the same thing happen. I thought, you mean bastard when he kicked it. Why does that ring alarm bells in my head. Great find though. It is amazing how far it has come in a short space of time.I guess the difficult thing would be to power it. I imagine it is not particularly energy efficient. |

Well if the rumors and reported advanced means to generate power come through, that will be overcome as well.
They have come a great distance from when I took Robotics at FVTC in Appleton, back in 1989. With the new healing rubber materials and silicones that contract when an electrical charge is applied...we are getting closer and closer to the day when we will be able to create an artificial human. -------------------- QUEST FOR THE REAL TRUTH |

Actually it is energy efficient and runs on a 2-stroke fuel engine.

Add flight, or the ability to leep tall buildings in a single bound. It's not a bird or an alien. It's super robo dog.
But can it think? Now that would be truly impresive. When it starts debating us on this forum and writes books. Then its scary. Right now its just another form of ATV. A really impressive one though. |

I often wonder when genetic engineering will advance to the point of machines being a combo cyborg. Put a brain in that thing with software controlled ethics and motivations.
