Transhumanism is philosophy with roots in the Enlightenment and Humanist movements of the Renaissance. Philosopher Max More wrote "Transhumanism is a class of philosophies that seek to guide us towards a posthuman condition. Transhumanism shares many elements of humanism, including a respect for reason and science, a commitment to progress, and a valuing of human (or transhuman) existence in this life." Transhumanists would use advancing technologies to transform 'ordinary' human beings into 'extraordinary' beings. The application of transhumanist ideologies would be no more striking than in the subject of human cloning. If we could eliminate disease, aging and natural death...should we? If we could create humans with superhuman strength or intelligence...should we? Consider a future like that proposed by the 1997 sci-fi thriller Gattaca. Or a future where disease and death or other physical limitations are no longer an issue. Would we still be human...or something different entirely? A new species of the genus Homo?

I am afraid I am a little selfish on this one, If I could eliminate disease and live forever, I would. I would love to see what the future brings. I am a bit of an optimist and think we are all learning and eventually bound for better things. I suspect that there would be some that are Transhumanists and did not even realize it.

i think the future will never bring an end to disease or death,no sooner you cure one disease another one pops up.would you want to live forever,the human mind can percieve begining and end,you would eventaully go insane or get really bored.transhumanism....does that mean god like abilites,i would find that a frightening possibility,but what for those who haven't or those of unsound mind.wishful thinking.the possibility of the future is cyborg ,a programmable society.

If you became mortally ill, and some scientist offered you a chance to live on by some cyborg combination of what was left OK in you, and mechanical/robotic bits. Assuming you were not on wheels like Dr Who's Daleks, I am suggesting something really advanced. In that situation you would choose death. Not me, wire me up and charge my batteries, I am up for it.

I agree, Dundee. I would certainly like to live long enough to see us get off this rock and answer one enduring question. But there are also ethics to consider and consequences to weigh.

I think in day dreaming we would all like to live forever. I use to think that way. Since I have watched my mama losing her precious memories and the dept of her loss, and the other men and women that live in the nursing home with her, I dont want to any more . They look so lonely and so defeated. Even if we could live alot longer and disease free, the end line is , we still would have to grow old and I rather be with my family in a far greater place then here ,then live longer alone.
