It seems that frogs in general have adapted some of the most interesting traits.
Perhaps there could be other lungless creatures we have yet to discover. http://www.livescience.com/animals/080407-lungless-frog.html -------------------- QUEST FOR THE REAL TRUTH |

Makes you wonder what may lie elsewhere. It would be fun to write a computer program that you input planetary conditions, atmosphere etc, and it predicted possible life form evolution. But I guess you would have to be a biologist, geologist, darwinologist and and everything else ologist to do it.
But a frog with no lungs is pretty weird. |

Insects and fish are all lungless. Insects breathe through their skin.

Insects and fish are all lungless. Insects breathe through their skin. But for insects, that is normal and always the way it is. Fish has gills. I wonder how long it can stay underwater? -------------------- QUEST FOR THE REAL TRUTH |

What I wonder is truly how "lungless" is it? People always take things out of context and assume a lot. Perhaps they are simply not lungs as we know them to be in the average frog. Perhaps the lung tissue is in its' throat, where the oxygen meets the blood barrier, just like in normal lungs. That can certainly be called "lungless", but has to be explained further than just the buzz word.
I'd like to know exactly how it's lungless. Sounds interesting, for sure. This post has been edited by senhuan: Apr 10 2008, 04:44 AM -------------------- -senhuan the duck

The story stated that the frog absorbs oxygen through it's skin.

The story stated that the frog absorbs oxygen through it's skin. Yes, my bad. I wonder what's in place of its' lungs? Are the other organs taking up the space? Is there a proto-lung? Another organ? A lung remnant? Did they evolve without lungs, or did they evolve past lungs? -------------------- -senhuan the duck

In France, lung-less 'frogs' are hard to come by.....

All frogs can breath through their skin as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frog#Skin They must use lungs, however, when on land. I would assume then, that these newly discovered frogs are never too far from the water for very long. |
