Sure.. Yucca Mountain.. why not, say the Temple Mount or Mecca? Oh.. because those religious sites merit respect. Indian holy sites? Not so much..for whatever reason.

Sure.. Yucca Mountain.. why not, say the Temple Mount or Mecca? Oh.. because those religious sites merit respect. Indian holy sites? Not so much..for whatever reason. Vet....you have a point there....but yucca mountain and that area was heavily mined in the gold and silver industries so it has long been out of the Western Shoshone and Paiute hands. Also since the late 1940s it was adjacent to the Nevada test site.....so its already heavily impacted by radiation so in reality it is a good place. |

The Temple Mount is in the city of Jerusalem and Mecca is also a centre of human habitation. Both are the sites of historic buildings. I have no respect for geological features themselves as objects of superstitious reverence. If some equivalent bare geological feature had some significance in any Abrahamic religion and some government was planning to use it for a similar purpose as Yucca Mountain, I would not object on the grounds of its religious significance. The facility has already been built into Yucca Mountain, so far as I know, although it is not yet open to receive waste. |
