This story was told by a famous Celtic scholar by the name of DR Anne Ross. Dr Ross was renowned for doing research work for a number of museums. In 1971 she was asked to examine two carved stone heads which had been discovered near Hadrians Wall. What happened next is told in her own words.
"Though there was nothing unpleasant about the appearance of the heads, I took an immediate dislike to them.I left them in the box that they had been sent in and put it in my study and planned to have them geologically analysed , and then to return them as soon as possible to the North"

A night or two after they had arrived, Dr Ross woke up suddenly about 2am, feeling very cold and frightened. She looked towards the door and by the light of the corridor caught sight of a tall figure, slipping out of the room. The impression she got from this figure waas that it was dark and shadow like and it was part animal and part human. She also had the strangest urge to follow this thing. It went downstairs and it then appeared in the kitchen, but by now she was terrified to follow this thing and ran back upstairs to her husband in the bedroom and woke him. He searched the house but found nothing. They both agreed that Dr Ross had had a bad dream and left it at that.
Her daughter also witnessed this strange figure when she returned home from school and was alone in the house. The first thing she saw was something huge, dark and inhuman on the stairs. It had rushed down towards her and vaulted over the bannister and landed on the floor with a soft thud. At the door it had vanished leaving her in a state of terror.
Dr Ross then stated to think that maybe the heads she was studying had something to do with this frightening phenomena. She learnt that on the night when the heads had been discovered, a North country woman, who lived next door to the garden that the heads had been found, was putting her child to bed, when she saw a horrifying creature walk into her room. She started screaming and didn't stop until help arrived and the thing mysteriously vanished.

Examination of the heads showed that they were carved from local Northumbrian stone, pehaps during the Romano-British period about 1800 years ago. They had possibly come from a military shrine or temple of the celtic leggionaires who made up part of the Roman garrison. If this was the case the heads would have been placed as gaurdians outside the local shrine of a God called Maponus(Divine son) He was a hunting God known to have been worshipped in many parts of the british isles.
The celts were head hunters and the heads of their enemies were buried beneath altars, nailed to gate posts or thrown into wells. They also believed that the severed heads had magical properties and these ritual displays were thought to convey fertility and ward off evil spirits. Similar powers were vested in the stone heads to ward off evil and protect their Gods.
Maybe this figure was an ancient protecter and may have stood gaurd over a God who has long since departed and been forgotten???.

Sometimes this story is reffered to as "The Hexham Heads".
I like it as it was told by a respected scholar and I have spoken to someone who knows Anne Ross(he is a parapsychologist) and validates the authenticity of the story.
Strange story, but in this case i would say it is true, to a certain extent.

Scottish history is littered with two headed men most of whom never seemed to get on with each other (Which is a problem in that situation) I can't remember their names but it may have been Bruachans. Just not sure. But the truth is out there...somewhere...like in the woods...or the forests...or just somewhere. Good chance of getting one in my back garden at the moment I swear I saw a guy swing past on a rope and wearing underpants yesterday. It's getting a bit wild.
