I can't see how they hope to achieve anything. If there is life there and they have a more advanced technology, then they won't see anything because their technology is much more effiicient than ours. They don't leak that much energy. If the civilization is less advanced than ours, then they won't be seen at all because they aren't using radio or lasers. The other problem is that this small range of technology that they are looking for ( radio, lasers ) is limited to a certain part of the overall civilization picture. If they do have an equivalent technology, we won't be able to find evidence of it until the signals reach us. By that time, they could have developed a better, more efficient technology, or reduced their civilization to rubble and gone back to a simpler level through war or disease. All I wish for them is good luck. They are going to need it. I remember seeing on TV a Japanese physicist saying the same thing that I am. I can't quite remember his name. I think it's Michio Kaku. It says on the search engine that he is a theoretical physicist.
