When I see posts on Egyption mysteries I admit that they often make me wonder. Still I must give credence to the explenations of Archaeologist because they have made a carear and science of study.

Here is the only pix of Egytpion work that I have found totally baffling. But I have never seen the achaeological explenation of it so I think that would be in order before making judgement.

Attached File  abydosufo_1_.jpg ( 6.93K ) Number of downloads: 15

To me it looks like there is a pictogram of a hellicoptor and a jet aircraft in there.

But I also have to consider this.
What if I chipped an outline of a two liter pepsi bottle in a stone and buried it. Three thousand years from now someone could dig it up. Suppose that by then they have nuclear fusion batteries that look like small pepsi bottles.

Would they then see proof that three thousand years earlier I had a pocket nuclear device?

Your thoughts?

Hi all wavey.gif

There are some texts, some representations that may look mysterious or enigmatic for the lay person… … even for the Egyptologist – as we find new hieroglyphs almost every day, believe me wink.gif.

As Bart said in his post, there is a strange ‘sign’ in the temple of Seti I in Abydos. And indeed, on the Net it is often portrayed as being a figure of a helicopter!

Palimpsest comes from “palimpsēstos”, a Greek word meaning “scraped anew”. This word is a technical term that describes a writing material (in this case, a papyrus) re-used after its original text has been scraped, erased. It was a very common technique since papyri were very expensive.

In ancient Egypt, alterations on or replacements of, texts, temples or tombs reliefs were often made, as a new Pharaoh succeeded another for instance. Time wear, and erosion also form what we call “ghosts”, but in this case it is not a ‘palimpsest’.

The palimpsest of Abydos is a text carved anew in order to change the first text – the earlier one.

The original text was the titular name (the titulary) of King Seti I. When Ramses II – Seti I’s son – came to the throne, craftsmen (under the orders of the new Pharaoh) altered the hieroglyphic signs and carved the titulary of Ramses II upon the one of Seti I. Thereafter, Ramses II retook the temple of Abydos and finished its construction.

What’s a titulary? It is the official names of the King/Queen, and it comprises 5 parts. Namely:

1) The Horus name - the oldest of the 5 names. It consists of 3 elements (1) a hawk that is perched on (2) a symbolic rendering of the archaic palace (the srḫ), within which is represented the King/Queen’s name (3).
2) The Two-Ladies names, to wit: the vulture-goddess (Nḫbt), which protects Upper Egypt; and the cobra-goddess (W3ḏt), which protects Lower Egypt.
3) The God Falcon name, also known in Egyptian as the Horus of Gold.
4) The Throne name of the King/Queen, also known as the prenomen.
5) And finally, the Son of Re name, also called the nomen.

Which part of the titulary is shown in the photo?

It’s one of the six Two-Ladies names of Seti I. Namely, the first one of them, that is:

Wḥm-mswt sḫm-ḫpš dr-pḏt-9

which I literally read as Born anew (to) powerfully (repulse) the Nine Bows.
One can also read it as (The one who) powerfully repulses the Nine Bows.
The Nine Bows we are dealing with are simply the nine enemies of Egypt. wink.gif

replaced by the first of the nine Two-Ladies names of Ramses II, that is:

Mk-Kmt w‛f-ḫ3swt

and which I read as Protector of Egypt (against the) foreign countries or as Protector of Egypt (and) Subduer (of the) foreign countries.

I hope it clarifies a bit this "mystery"...

Cool, I thought it had a better explenation than helecopters and jets.

I guess it's just a pepsi bottle after all. I have always wondered about this one because these symbols are not seen in the exact same form elsewhere.

A little hard to totally erase stone and start over I guess, so to change a symbol you have to modify the outline to make it look more like the intended shape. So it becomes a slightly anomalous shape.
