I don’t consider myself as a sceptic. I don’t consider my self as a believer either.
I just like to keep an open mind and I do not reject nothing. The only risk I run is to make a fool of myself wich in my life I have experienced quite a lot and honestly don’t care too much about.

But also, I am a logical person:

Number of known galaxies in the univrese: 3000
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/astronomy/faq/part8/section-4.html

number of stars in our galaxy 400,000,000,000
http://seds.lpl.arizona.edu/messier/more/mw.html

400,000,000,000 X 3000 = 1,200,000,000,000,000 stars aprox
This number is beyond the imagination for most of us. It is probably more than the number if sand grains on our planet (I did not verify this assumption… wink.gif

What is the possibility that at least one of those stars had a livable planet about like earth where life evolved to an intelligent being at least as intelligent as us?
This is without considering that life could also evolve in an environment very different than the one we consider needed to sustain life.

One would need to be VERY foolish, narrow minded and also ILLOGIC to not open his mind to the very high possibility that we are not alone to be intelligent in the universe …

As for me, I think our universe is sworming with intelligent life...

As for the possibility that one of this intelligence is visiting us?
Well… lets read the other threads… wink.gif

Well… lets read the other threads…
Indeed! It has been asked a couple of times before, this question: what do you think about aliens coming here?

If you Do read the other threads, it won't be long until you find one with the same question, and even answers to them smile.gif

Sorry there snoopy but what your employing is a circular argument. You use as your starting point the fact that there is life on earth. Put it this way...if we are alone in the universe we would in fact be standing on earth saying "Hey there's gotta be life out there look at all dem planets" Now when you consider that a huge number of these so called 'habitable' places are within different radio, light, radiation distances to us and accepting that they are the older of the planets then we should have accepted that contact would have been made by now by employing your logic. It hasn't happened. Now don't get me wrong I believe there is life out there. However a circular argument based on the fact that there is life on earth is nothing but proof that there is life on earth. (Dawkins;1991)

Based on this fact and others, it is very likely that life exists in the Universe, outside of our knowledge. However, you won't be amazed to know that this thread has come up more times than stars in the known Universe...

Just to carry it on though, I don't believe the vastness of space is any proof that life exists, it makes it far more likely however. Millions of bacteria live on the sharp end of a pin, and your body is made of trillions of living cells. I know that intelligent life lives for my own reasons, but as someone unsure, I would say the evidence ways in favour towards that of life existing.

I remember in a previous thread someone pointed out that a large space is no proof that something may live there, and the example was that an elephant wouldn't be found in a large desert. This is true, but the elephant would have evolved from an animal that may also have evolved into a different mammal, depending on the situation. I'm no expert on Biology and evolution as you can probably tell, but surely this is the case?

Anyway I need to find that packet of fishcakes, so please excuse me...

(For any and all newcomers and strangers to Ben's mind and thoughts, Dawkins is a well known biologist that Ben mentions from time to time)

Yes your presentation is the evidence which substantiates your thoughts. Otherwise why present it???

Be very careful with this one. The number might SEEM large to you, but what is the smalles number you know?

i.e. the planck length is quite small

Now what if the probability for intelligent life is 10E-55 or 10E-80? How large then would be the chance there is more intelligent life out there with only 1.2E15 stars out there???

It would be EXTREMLY improbable... so improbable that a 'LOGICAL' and 'OPEN' mind would come to the conclusion that it is FOOLISH to believe there are others out there... to keep it short: As long as you do not KNOW the probability of life... it is foolish to think others foolish who do not share your wrong mathematical view. wink.gif

ArianeIV,

Are you a scientist of somekind, you do seem to know a great deal of maths and science?

I would hope ArianeIV knows math and science since in his profile he said he is a aerospace engineer....

I would be little worried if he did not have that math down....

And above math really isn't all that complex.. if you don't know it yet.. you will at some point

Only one way to be sure, Andpau.

Have a seat, Ariane... Now, if I have three hydrogen fuel cells, and I take away one, how many are left?
