 Images in Signatures |

You can no longer have images in your signature because it has caused a lot of headache for mods and members trying to make sure that images are not too big and file sizes are small enough for people on dial-up (like me). I can't set automatic restrictions, just turn the IMG tag on or off in sigs so I have turned it off. I'm sorry to those of you who keep images in sigs sensible but I have been forced into a corner on this one and taking this option away is best for the forum.

Matt put that in as a temporary measure to control the situation until I got back. When I had read everything the moderators had to say on the matter I took the decision to get rid of images in signatures because it is not fair to make the mods enforce the restriction - they do more than enough work already. I know a lot of people like their images and take pride in them but it stopped being practical, again, sorry.

The risk is that users may abuse images by inserting lots of useless ones.

It wasn't just that, scrolling down a page of images between each post is annoying no matter how fast your connection is.

On some forums, especially gaming related ones, people like to have a banner style image in their sig which can be an extension of their avatar - just to have a bit more space to be creative and show of their Photoshop skills. That's cool enough if people are making the effort but there are no automatic restrictions that can be placed on sig images so it's very hard to regulate.

Yup. I used to have a neato banner, but since the forum we were using didn't support uploads, and I didn't have a website to put it on, I wasn't able to use it.
And yeah, people would sometimes put huge friggin' images in their signature, and when I had dial up, it would take upwards of 5 minutes to load some of the larger threads, and they'd screw up the screen so I'd have to scroll right to left to be able to read anything. |
