Well(sigh) how's it going happen and what do we do?
Will it be aliens or a big Nuke? Maybe a superflu that keeps mutating but remains extremely virilant... In any case I would like everyone to brainstorm on how we as a human race could survive anything that MIGHT happen, because as I see it my government(America) isn't very concerned(gov. doesn't formally recognize armageddon at a threat) with any worst-case armageddon scenarios, or we(the public) would know how to re-act; like when you get a tornado warning on the news (at least there is a plan in place for that). Or maybe the politicians are concerned, but they know that the population is too large for anyhope of making an effort to save lives without jepordizing their own saftey in an attepmt to survive armageddon, so they keep quiet so they can have their little 'plan of escape' executed without interference from a doomed and frightened public.(don't believe for one second that the president doesn't have some kind of fallout shelter, which by the way, was built, and is now maintained by you, the taxpayer.) So, if they aren't going to help us, then we need to come up with a plan and soon, cause I for one, don't like the fact that there is none...or is there???
The plan would have to be broken up into phases in this order: 1.) Preparation - Brainstorming, Securing land & provisions, possibly blueprints for a shelter of some kind, Determining how long and number of people a such a facility could house, Procedure for getting the plan out to the public, Identifying foremen & formwomen to oversee completion of the next phases. 2.) Building - Cost of Materials and labor and how many of these we would need to construct, even if it seems unattainable(money won't matter much if there is no one left to spend it) 3.)Identifying who goes first - It may not seem fair but look back to the story of the Titanic...Women and children of the RICH seemed to take precedence over everyone else, and in our case it's the politicians who are the RICH, while we sink into the sea. Is this really fair for us? All the while their safety is made possible by our taxes, meanwhile were are left to drown...I don't think so! 4.)Have a Drill program - BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP... This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast system. If this were and actual emergency you would've recieved EMERGENCY RESPONSE INSTRUCTIONS followed by the tone you just heard. Remember, this is only a test.(need I say more?) So let's hear them inputs from them there big noggins o' yall. Edited - You may vote for more than one scenario as one may be the result of another happening first. -------------------- "Who watches the Watchmen?" watchmenmovie.com

I have no idea as to how the world will end..but a good bottle of champange and good company (okay maybe theres a guy in there somewhere too
) and the wind in my face..few cyanide tabs ..nice way to go..better than going slowly from starvation ,in fighting, radiation, Aliens healthy eating plans (me and you lot) Or even having my insides pulled out as an Alien experiment...nope ..think I'll go for the quicker method....

I voted Nukes, possibly from other countries..than Russia. America..or England, but also super flu or some biological contamination as other.
I'm of a philosophy when your times up, it's up and there's nothing you can do about it. But I would make sure that if I could not save myself, my children would be my main priority. How to build a survival plan and who should go first is something I will have to think about. I'll get back to you on that when I'm not so tired.

Disprove...I'm inclined to believe that when nukes are launched toward our country...we wont recieve any warning what so ever...because the power that be will think it best not to inform us if we are about to be annihilated
And those that do intend to launch aren't going to announce the fact...but they know the moment their bombs are detected they themselves will be nuked...so they'll want to knock as many targets as possible before return fire.. That leaves the little people without a hope and prayer... |

I voted "other". I don't think we'll end up killing ourselves or dying in some major disaster. I believe that we'll survive somehow and as we advance in science we'll populate the stars. Who knows, maybe in the billions of years it takes for our universe to either fade out or perform a "big crunch" (opposite of the big bang) we'll have developed technology to prevent it or save ourselves. But I'm optimistic, because I got plans.
However, in case there ever is a nuclear war or other major disaster, I'm pretty sure I'll survive. I live in a small city. While it is the capital of Alaska, it's small and relatively unimportant, and I think I could get a ways into the mountains before any bombs started falling here. |

(Hodge) But I'm optimistic, because I got plans.
This would be a great time to share them...are you really going into the mountains for refuge? How long could(not would) you stay there? Are you taking anyone with you? If yes, have you the provisions, at present, to do it? I know I don't because I would not know specifically what I would need to survive 6 months or 12 months or even 12 years(that may be pushing it but when you consider the amount of Nuclear waste from all those bombs, making our soil radoactive for X amount of dozens of generations to come...) I wonder, How many have already given up...hundred of thousands? millions? BILLIONS? The people in this forum are really, VERY smart and I want to pick everyone's brain for the possibility of survival from a post...anomaly. But I need your help. Please, you all are experts at this kind of thing(debate). -------------------- "Who watches the Watchmen?" watchmenmovie.com

I thought we had counter missile-missiles, or something like that?
Of course, if people snuck bombs in and detonated them from within cities, those high-tech thingies wouldn't do much good. Hmmm...yup...nuclear war...it's just a matter of time. Hey, Opal...where did you get your tablets at? |

If nuclear war occurs...there will be survivors...some people think that a nuke will level the entire planet...that's wrong...people will survive...but those who do will suddenly find themselves thrust back into the dark ages
Disprove...I'd say if its a bomb...head for the mountain caves...of course if you know its coming you'll only have precious few minutes to get there...you'll want enough water, canned food and emergency supplies as you can stockpile...it wouldnt hurt, I assume, to have a good radiation suit to limit your exposure...and you'll have to take into account sub-zero temps...also take plant seeds which can survive with limited light and are edible...get a good herb book and take seeds of medicinal value |

Yeah...I know...that is the thing about terrorism.
Everyone talks about how maybe aliens will come to earth and give us weapon technology. I wish they'd come and uncreate some weapon technology for us. Not holding my breath, though. Oh, well...I guess we all might be speaking German or Japanese right now if it hadn't ever been created. |

I'm not so sure that the 'land of the free' will continue to be the 'land of the free' more like the 'land of the sheep to the slaughter' |

Interestingly, that line was a question...
"Oh, say, does that star spangeled banner yet wave....?" Pretty cool. It makes me really like the song. |

When you referred to having 'little hope' I thought of the Anthem and that motivated me, not because this is the 'land of the free', but because all through the bombs bursting in air, our flag was still there, and in that there is hope. -------------------- "Who watches the Watchmen?" watchmenmovie.com

that depends if the flag continues to represent 'freedom', as it should, or if it will become a symbol of terror itself...

I think biological warfare will likely be the method because it presents 'controlled' elimination or destruction..

DisproveU
.are you really going into the mountains for refuge? How long could(not would) you stay there?
It all depends. If a nuke hit my city, then yes, I'd have to stay in the mountains. A long ways away. If not, then I could go back to the city and scavenge. But, if the city was completely levelled, I guess I'd have to rely on my survival skills. I know what berries and roots and such are edible around here, and I could shoot a deer or a bear. If I was lucky enough to be near the ocean, I could fish. Salmon are good, and we have trout in our freshwater. Of course I'd take people with me—as many as possible, as long as they wouldn't be a burden (i.e. no valley girls or stoner guys). I guess if it came down to it, I could probably live in the wild indefinetly, although I'd have to make my way south to where the winters are milder. what I would need to survive 6 months or 12 months or even 12 years
Anything that will last. A lighter and a pocket knife can prove invaluable, I carry one of each on me wherever I go. Food and water you'd want to leave at home, as they'll only last so long. A tent or two would be good, but they can be heavy, so you'd be better off with a tarp and some sleeping bags. But, a knife and a way to make fire are probably the two most important and easiest things you can take with you. A gun would be important, too, unless all the animals were dead. Hell, you know how to survive, don't you? You were in the military, don't they teach you survival skills? kellyb I thought we had counter missile-missiles, or something like that?
Here in Alaska. To give you an idea about how well they work, I'll just say this. It managed to hit 1 out of 3 test missiles—and they cheated by putting GPS on the missiles. Not something I would justify backing out of the ABM treaty for. Oh, well...I guess we all might be speaking German or Japanese right now if it hadn't ever been created.
No. We used the bomb after Germany had been defeated and Japan had holed up on their island. We used the bomb for two reasons: we wanted to test it in action, and it would have killed an estimated 100,000 or so men to invade. iwant2believe I think biological warfare will likely be the method because it presents 'controlled' elimination or destruction..
Sort of, but whatever virus someone creates in a lab is eventually going to get back to them... Meh. We'll be fine. I bet Kerry wins the election, pulls out our troops gradually, and then the Middle East ignites and blows themselves up. Selfish? Maybe. But I'd rather the ones we're most afraid of kill each other than us... |
