I just woke up, looked out my window, and saw two white lights close beside eachother (attached to one craft, like a chopper). They did not flash or anything for at least 30 sec., then it went to normal plane lights, flicking from red to white quickly.

Do planes always have the flickering lights, or do they only turn them on once reaching a certain altitude?. I ask because I live near an airport and it may have just taken off, and not switched to blinking lights. I thought they are supposed to have blinking lights during take off though (and through their whole trip).

It kind of sounds like it had it's landing lights on. And maybe they were bright enough for you not to be able to see the blinking lights. And they either turned the landing lights off, or they moved to an angle that made it possible to see the blinking lights. I have seen something similar before.

It was a bright light in the sky. 'Fire in the sky' came to mind, and I pointed it out to my friend. He sped up and we watched it for a few minutes, coming up on it pretty fast. When we got right up to it, in an instant it 'changed' and you could see that it was a private jet w/ landing lights on. It was freaky for a few minutes. But, ended up being nothing.

Ok, but I'm pretty sure it was'nt landing (I may be taking this too literal). Do they use the same lights while taking off?.

If I remember right, pilots are required to have their NAV lights on from one hour before sunset to an hour after sunrise.

There are several kinds of lights on even small private aircraft.

The Strobe/Beacon are two bright white strobe lights, one above and below the aircraft.

The NAV lights are the green and red ones; Red on the left and tail, Green on the right.

The Landing/Taxi lights are just like headlights on a car. They are mainly to make it easier to see a plane on final approach, and to see the tarmac once on the ground.

I didn't see what you saw, but I would guess that you saw a plane taking off at night. The Landing light is also the Taxi light (at least on a Cessna 172), which you use to see where you're going when you're on the ground.

If the pilot had a lot to do on take off he could have forgotten to turn his lights off.

That's most likely the case.

Thanks.

We were landing into London Heathrow Airport and they turned all the lights of.
I thought you had to have the strobe lights on during landing.
??????????
