Hi guys in my opinion 2001 A Space Odessey is the best sci-fi movie ever made for a number of reasons
1. it was so far ahead of its time ( 1968 ) - even now we have yet to catch up with the movie i.e. Clavius Moonbase 2. it was visually stunning - the ape to space shuttle blue danube sequence was brilliant, the star child, the monolith, all iconic images and yes some would say the ape suits weren't the best but somehow that never took anything away from the movie 3. the star of the movie wasn't a human - HAL 9000 super computer voiced by Douglas Rain was hauntingly eerie 4. it was made for $ 10.5 million - which is peanuts when you compare it to say $150 million for the movie Armageddon ( 1991 Bruce Willis movie ) another really good movie 5. there was hardly any dialogue - Kubrick let the visuals and music do the talking The first time i saw this movie was with a friend of mine it was at our local cinema in about 1971/72 i would have been 12/13 i remember we walked home after the movie approx 2 miles and i remember both of us never spoke a word to each other we were both absolutley stunned by what we had seen remember we were 2 young lads who'd witnessed Neil Armstrong be the first man to set foot on the moon yet for almost 2 and a half hours we'd been visually stunned by this movie for days and weeks and probably months after seeing the movie that was our main topic of conversation and if you hadn't seen the movie well it was hardly worth talking to us ( not that many people did anyway lol ) To finish my ramble i own the movie on DVD and have watched it on a 50'' LCD tv and through a 5,1 digital home theatre system and thoroughly enjoyed the movie but to be fair if it were possible i would love to see this re-released into the movie theatres to watch it on the big screen finally does it stand up today 40 years on from its release in my opinion it would be a resounding yes i bet many writers and producers wish they could create something as spectacular as Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick did 40 years ago and thats why in my opinion 2001 A Space Oddessey is the best sci-fi movie ever made what do you think guys ? i'd love to hear your opinions This post has been edited by oskar: Jul 7 2008, 04:10 AM -------------------- '' Open the pod bay doors HAL ''
