An interesting audio link of Joe Rogan (yeah, the "Fear Factor" guy) espousing thoughts on his experiences with Dimethyltriptamine (DMT) and it's relationship to dreams. You would have never guessed it of this guy...

Joe Rogan Explains Life

For further consideration.....

I have provided two sources below with information on this drug. Before you get too caught up in the hype please keep this in mind about dimethyltryptamine, a.k.a. dmt;

1- if you have a physical or mental illness and take this, you will absolutely make yourself sick and end up in a hospital

2. it will make you very sick or ill and can even kill you if you mix it with; alcohol, blue cheese, ectasy, mdma, 2cb, cocaine, heorine, amphetamines, methadone, any anti-psychotic medication, any anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication, and anti-biotics.

Kids are mixing it with booze, speed, ectasy, coke, heroin, crack coke, uppers and then wondering why they die or end up in the hospital brain damaged and drooling.

More to the point, it does not make you think brilliantly.

In the 60's Timothy Leary and others used to write about it and say how it expanded their minds. In Leary's case all he was, was a druggie lecherous old man who partied all the time and loved screwing women half his age and used drugs to make himself respectable to the in crowd of his day.

DMT can be found in certain drinks or substances used in religious ceremonies and when it is used by aboriginal peoples they do not use it simply to get high and f..ck...they have a very serious and disciplined way of using it as part of their belief systems.

So listen, I am no angel and I have had my share of drugs so I aint lecturing anyone, all I am saying is its like any other drug - how and why you use it should be more serious then just wanting to do it to have fun. It can be pretty heavy duty stuff if you mix it or take it with the wrong think and you certainly don't want to go around messin with this stuff if you have been diagnosed with any kind of psychiatric or organic illness.

Peyote, dmt, ergot fungus, acid, meskaline, all these kinds of things can and do leave people f..cked up. Here's the links for the general info:

source: www.magic-mushrooms.net

"We won't dazzle you with all kinds of chemical combinations and formulas; if you want to know more about it, you'll find the necessary references in the bibliography at the end of the book. We did however select some pieces of information.
Magic mushrooms contain the active substances psilocine and psilocybine with hallucinogenic qualities. About 75 kinds of mushrooms are known which contain psilocybine and/or psilocine. Psilocybine and psilocine belong to the so-called tryptamine family and their effect resembles the natural neurotransmitter serotonine, also known as the `happiness hormone'. The names come from the Greek `psilos' (bald) and `kube' (head) and this is of course related to the outward appearance of the mushroom. Psilocybine and psilocine are so-called alkaloids (nitrogenous substances which appear in nature). Apart from these two, we deal with a whole series of other substances which are less active or almost inactive, bacocystine and norbaeocystine are the best known. The Amanita contains totally different active substances like isoxazal and ibotenic acid, but because of possible errors and the danger of poisoning it is better to keep away from the Fly-Agaric. The amounts of psilocybine and psilocine vary. The main difference is that psilocine is unstable and breaks down when the mushroom is dried or cooked, while psilocybine is much more resistant. Both substances are psychoactive, but because the molecular weight of psilocine is less, it is relatively stronger; about 1,4 times.
DMT
Dimethyltriptamine (DMT) is the active substance on a somewhat deeper chemical level. Both psilocine and psilocybine contain DMT, in psilocybine the 4-phosphpryloxy N, N-dimethyltriptamine. DMT appears in many hallucinogenic plants and compounds, like in Ayahuasca, but it comes also be in a pure form as a powder. On its own, ingested DMT doesn't do a thing for you (smoking does), because your body renders it ineffective via the MAO (mono-amine-oxydase) mechanism. If you take a MAO-inhibitor first then you do feel the effect. There is a lesson here. Do not to take any substances acting as MAO-inhibitor (some herbs like Passiflower, Peganum harmala, Johimbe and some medical drugs) in combination with magic mushrooms if you don't want to be in for a surprise. "

also from the wikipedia inter-net site;

Dimethyltryptamine, also known as DMT or N,N-dimethyltryptamine, is a hallucinogenic indole, similar in structure to the neurotransmitter serotonin, created during normal metabolism in low amounts by the human body. Pure DMT at room temperature is a colorless waxy or crystalline solid. DMT was first chemically synthesized in 1931. It also occurs naturally in many species of plants. DMT-containing plants are used in several South American shamanic practices. It is one of the main active constituents of snuffs like yopo and of the potion ayahuasca.

DMT is not hallucinogenically active if ingested orally unless combined with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), such as harmaline. Without an active MAOI, the body quickly metabolizes DMT, and therefore has no significant hallucinogenic effect.

Hallucinogenic properties

DMT is a powerful psychoactive substance. If DMT is smoked, injected, or orally ingested with an MAOI, it can produce powerful entheogenic experiences including true hallucinations (perceived extensions of reality). A trip sitter is often employed to assist the drug user stay physically and mentally healthy, and, in the case of smoked DMT, to catch the pipe when the user loses awareness of it.

Smoked: If DMT is smoked, the maximal effects last for a short period of time (30 minutes +). The onset after inhalation is very fast (less than 45 seconds) and maximal effects are reached within about a minute.

Insuffulation: If DMT is insuffulated (snorted through the nostrils) it will last slightly longer than if smoked and has less powerful effects.

Injection: Injected DMT produces an experience similar to inhalation in duration, intensity, and characteristics, although by some accounts it is more emotionally clinical (versus spiritual).

Oral ingestion: DMT, which is broken down by the digestive enzyme monoamine oxidase, is inactive if taken orally, unless combined with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). The shamanic potion ayahuasca, or yage, is a tea-like admixture of the boiled leaves, bark or roots of a variety of plants, usually including Psychotria viridis which contains high levels of DMT, and Banisteriopsis caapi which contains harmala alkaloids which are powerful MAOIs. A common source in the western US is Reed canary grass or Phalaris arundinacea. This invasive grass contains high levels of DMT and other alkaloids . Taken orally with an appropriate MAOI, DMT produces a long lasting (over 1 hour), slow onset, high intensity experience. MAOI should be used with extreme caution as they can make common over the counter drugs and foods toxic.

Induced DMT experiences can include profound time-dilation, time travel, journeys to paranormal realms, and encounters with spiritual beings or other mystical/trans-dimensional modalities that, by most first hand accounts, defy verbal or visual description.

In a 1988 study conducted at UNM, psychiatrist Rick Strassman found that approximately 20% of volunteers injected with high doses of DMT had experiences identical to purported Alien Abductions.

Chemistry

DMT is a derivative of tryptamine with two additional methyl groups at the amine nitrogen atom. DMT is often synthesized by the Speeter-Anthony synthesis from indole using oxalyl chloride, dimethylamine, and lithium aluminum hydride as reagents. DMT is usually used in its base form, but it is more stable as a salt, e.g. as a fumarate. In contrast to DMT base its salts are soluble in water. DMT in solution degrades relatively fast and should be stored protected from air and light in a freezer.

[edit]

Speculations

Several highly speculative and as yet untested hypotheses suggest that endogenous DMT, produced in the human brain, is involved in certain psychological and neurological states. As DMT is highly probably naturally produced in small amounts by the human organism, some believe it plays a role in dreaming, near-death experiences and other mystical states. It has been speculated by the researcher Jace Callaway that DMT might be connected with visual dreaming. It is also speculated that DMT can be found in elevated amounts during times of visual dreaming or after near-death experiences.

Writers on DMT include Terence McKenna and Jeremy Narby, though many people treat their writings with skepticism, probably because they are not affiliated with mainstream institutions. McKenna writes of his experiences with DMT in which he encounters entities he describes as "Self-Transforming Machine Elves". Other users report visitation from external intelligences attempting to impart information. These Machine Elf experiences are said to be shared by many DMT users. From a researcher's perspective, perhaps best known is Rick Strassman's DMT: The Spirit Molecule (ISBN 0892819278); Strassman also proposed that DMT is made in the pineal gland, although this is only speculation.

[edit]

Legal status

DMT is classified in the United States as a Schedule I drug. In December of 2004, the Supreme Court lifted a stay thereby allowing the Brazil-based O Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal church to use hoasca tea (containing DMT) in their Christmas services this year. The Supreme Court heard arguments on November 8th, 2005. A ruling is expected sometime in June 2006

DMT is classified in Canada as a Schedule III drug.

DMT is classified in the United Kingdom as a Schedule I/Class A drug.

In Brazil there are a number of religious movements based on the use of Ayahuasca, usually in an animistic context that may be shamanistic or, more often, mixed with Christian imagery; these were legalized recently after official inquiry into the tea.

[edit]

DMT in popular culture

The plot of the movie Blueberry touches DMT practices of Native Americans. The movie also features scenes of a DMT induced psychedelic experience. Recent web discussion with the creator of the film has indicated that the visions are meant to represent the use of various plants, the classic ayahuasca mixture being one of these. In addition Datura and Mescaline related visions are conveyed.

The first letters of the Shpongle's "Divine Moments of Truth" track from the Are You Shpongled? album stand for DMT.

Rube,

Thanks for posting all of the above. Good information and good advice although I'm not quite sure which "hype" you are referring to.

It is quite interesting to me, the connection between DMT and visions of "Aliens", "Machine Elves" and the like. Why these specific images described over and over again? Why not "God" or some other more recognizable spiritual experience? Why does the psychotropic effects of this specific substance elicit these types of "visions". Of course, it's highly unlikely that DMT visions accounts for "Saucers" appearing over Washington DC in 1952, nor does it account for multiple witness sightings such as Rendlesham or those of countless airline pilots.

I find this connection most interesting. What it means I do not know, but McKenna seems to have spent alot of time thinking about it.

Thanks for that Rube...a voice of reason! smile.gif

Oh you are too Cow...but ya know what I meant...

It is important to distinguish between dreams, hypnagogic hallucinations and true or lucid hallucinations...I think any of the three can be present during a 'high'. I believe that the mind will manufacture hallucinations out of archtypes...some common archtypes are angels (though not God, strange that the subconscious mind has trouble conceptualizing God...or perhaps that is how it should be) and other mythical figures (after all, our mythical figures are composites of our archtypes)...but, I think, dream images are manufactured out of symbols (a form of archtype) and that is the key to dream interpretation...to identify the symbols and interpret them within the context of the dream...what all that has to do with your question, Cow, I'm not sure lol...except to say that these images may be common place specifically because they are drawn from universal archtypes...like the 'old hag' present in many episodes of sleep paralysis

I`ve done my share of Lsd,shrooms, mescaline in my younger days never have seen aliens but saw ghosts and elf like people on a shroom trip.

The strangest thing with those drugs is your concept of time is so distorted hours felt like years and even decades for me on some trips.

Mescaline had me so triped out that the whole trip felt like I was having a Out of body experience parts of my life were flashing by it was very strange.

Also one night about 8 of us took Lsd and one girl had a trip that she never returned from the drug fried her mind so rube is right that stuff can be dangerous.

"There is building in global society an increasingly intense expectation of the intervention into human history by UFOs. It is very similar in tone to the buildup of messianic expectation in the Hellenistic world in the several centuries preceding the birth of Christ. "

What an intro McKenna has here! This is true, folks, there is a fluoresence of contact experiences now.

If you "believe" in contact experiences, then you will probably be looking and reading to see what's next in this buildup.

If you are a completely skeptical of contact experiences, as I was/am (yes, both are true for me at the same time), I feel you should ask yourself (as I did/do), why are we seeing such numerous cases of this very pronounced abduction neurosis? The great John Mack (RIP, Dr. Mack) always pointed out that delusional people move into and embrace their delusions. Even scary delusions are "useful" for most sufferers and they embrace them (don't want to lwet go of them). UFO abduction victims do not usually follow that pattern of embracing delusions- they really shy away from the experience and its pain. Therefore, Mack questioned that ab. victims were delusional at all, much less, in the traditional way.

I wish somebody would clean up and make room in their PM space......Tutu?

I am specifically curious about this particular substance. You can tell by how excited Rogan gets, that his experience with DMT was unlike any other he has experienced. It got him thinking. Mckenna talks about the availabilty of the substance worldwide and it's use in shamanistic rituals. It also seems to have the same effect that the ET contact experience seems to elicit...that being an opening of the mind to other potentials. It seems only DMT consistantly brings upon the user visions of aliens and saucers.....has this always been true? If so, why the parallel with real life in that respect?

Call me curious....

I've made some room, Cow smile.gif

I rarely read 'abduction accounts' here on...and not for lack of interest or concern...but percisely because of such. I am open-minded about the possiblity of alien abductions and will remain so until the enigma is proven one way or another. And for the record, there are some individuals here that I believe 100% that they had some sort of alien encounter. However, I also recognize that there are some or many who feel a childish need to fabricate stories. As well, there are some or many who suffer from delusions and hallucination. It is because of the possible true abductions and the mentally ill ones that I refrain from commenting most of the time. Whether the abductions is true or the product of delusion/hallucination, it is expected that the experiencer will have undergone a traumatic event. I try not to make light of such trauma and in the same sense, I dont want to encourage delusional behavior by discussing it as reality based. So what to do? How to tell the difference?

That's interesting Cow...now I'm curious if there isnt some parallel between sightings/encounters and the experiencer's mind...perhaps it is the experiencer, unknowingly, who opens a 'portal'?

Yes, maybe a portal gets chemically opened because the chemical is produced in the human body

Being that I am a coinissuer of exotic psychadelics (I have done probably about a quarter of the drugs mentioned in TIhKaL and PIhKaL (both great books by what I consider the most acheived couple in the world, Alexander and Ann Shulgin, I would suggest you read parts of them online)) I have done nn-DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, and even Bufenotiene (deffinitly not suggested, it is a poison) in multiple ways (traditional ayuhusca, powder mixed with MAOI's, smoked, sublingual, and once injected (only drug I have ever injected, I have a strong needle-phobia)), and yet I have barely even scratched the surface of understanding it. It is inexplicable in any language because language is only past knowledge, Dimethyltryptamine creates new lnowledge of a whole new type. You don't hallucinate while on it, you experience while on it, instead of altering externel stimuli its more of creating stimuli. The things you see are usually not something produced by your concious, but things that you are confused about unconciously. For example a week or so after 9/11 I did a massive dose of 5-MeO-DMT (21mg on a +/-3mg scale) and I experienced the effects of religion that could/might/may happen on the world, I didn't see or hear people but I sensed seperate conciousnesses with positions that couldnt be described on a geometrical graph (2d or 3d), they ended up destroying eachother because of differences, in the end only one large singular conciousness existed meaninglessly; This had a definite effect on me, from then on I truly became atheist and even fatalist/nihilist for a year or so, wether this was good or bad depends on the beholder, I personally think it was good because I learned alot in that year from observing religious groups, at the time it was out of hate but overall I gained a better understanding and decided that life could be given a purpose even if it is a meaningless entity controlled by probabilty.

I hope that gives at least someone a minute understanding of my personal facet (of this infinity faceted) drug, I also hope that it will show that drugs are to be taken with a grain of salt and not lumped in one category.

BTW rube, I like Timothy Leary, in his younger years he helped certain LSD chemists (which is why, I suspect, The Brotherhood of Eternel Love were so quci and eager to help him when he was in jail and that is probably also the reason The Weathermen allowed him to give the government a tipoff ot their location).

Also I would like to point out the ethnogen 'Salvia Divinornium' has similar effects (conciouss ermision compared to consious alteration), it is considered safe (you can't overdose easily (probably impossible, but you deffinitly won't overdose on any leaf or extraction lower than 120x) and it usually has a much more lighthearted side (I can't tell you how many times it has sent me into laughing fits and then feeling good for a few weeks (seriously I mean a few weeks, a good temporary outlook on life with have you feelin' good for a long time)) ify ou understand what you see isn't real. It is also legal so you can get it at a headshop near you or online. If you do use it please use it responsibly and intelligintly because I would sorly hate to see it get scheduled (because you know it would get scheduled as class I even though it doesnt fit the criteria at all), the news has already been showing reports about stupid teens thinking its like cannabis and having a bad trip (not like they would show the smart people having good trips).

Extremely pertinent and helpful insights Predator. Thanks you for sharing this.

DMT does seem to be unique in it's effects on the human mind. Do you know or have you heard of anyone NOT having such a profound experience? Anyone you may know of who had a bad one (excepting improper dosage, etc)?

Tomarrow when I am rested I will tell of the experience I had when I IM'd it. Basicly their isn't such thing as a bad trip because you learn from every trip, wether or not a certain trip will affect you mentaly depends on the person, what I experienced could easily put a person with less (or even more) experience into PTSD permanently.

I'm 'little' drunk right now so if this doesnt make sense I'll edit it later.

I would like to say that you should reserve your judgement until the end of this post, and remember 'the drug is the canvas, while I am the painter'.

2 or so minutes after injecting (intra muscular) 5mg of 5-meo-dmt I started to feel the familiar onset of the trip. But this time I was the conciouss of a sociopathic serial murderer. 'I' murdered plenty of people during the trip, but i experienced it from a sick point of view. Every 'murder' i found to be a sick pleasure and I could have rationally justified each one as a benefit to society. i won't go into details because those are quite personel to me. After the trip for about a month or so I was scared that this was my future conciousness, but after a while I learned that this was simply a way for me to understand the simple, but complex, fact that 'good' and 'evil' are subjective to the beholder and even what i considered irrational can be rationalized by someone else. I understand that my specific trip would have mentally damaged probably most people but it helped me to understand a concept. So wether good or bad it was psychologicly on me I will continue my pursuit of psychadelics.

BTW, somehting i am not proud of but I owned a bufo alvairous (a species of toad that secretes 5-meo-dmt) and I sold 'hits' of 5-meo and no-one that I sold it to had an experinece that didn;t teach them soemthing.

BTW, since that trip i have been much more diciplined about my use of psychadelics. I usually stop using any other psychoactives (cannabis and even caffeine, chocolate, and gum; anything that causes a change in conciousness) and take 5-htp (precursor to serotonin)supplements for a week or more, and then i fast (to cleanse myslef of anything that could adverly affect me) so i have learned something physical also (BTW, I would suggest anyone who use psychadelics also to do soemthing to cleanse themsleves before).
