It is also the date a supposed metor is supposed to smash into earth, but who knows. IMO, this planet is probably not inhabited by highly advanced species, without the precense of a star there would be little energy/heat/light. However, astronamers have proven that there is a "Planet X" and that it is on a highly eliptical orbit, heading back into our solar system in the next 10 years.

OK..for the very last time on this board (yeah..right..)..
The Mayan calender doesnt "END" in 2012. A KATUN ends. Sort of like an 'era'. You could theoretically continue the Mayan calender. "High" Mayan culture ended so they never had a chance to construct calenders for the new KATUN but that doesnt mean there isnt one. This is already the 4th. If you want to know more..ASK THEM. The Mayan still exist. There are more than a million Mayan speakers extant in Mexico and so on.
