Well Mannequin basically summed it up but I'm going to go into a bit more detail with it.

Let's say you're a teacher and you aren't 100% sure of the answer to a question in the lesson. Are you going to ask the 'dumber' kids for the answer or are you going to ask your best student? Was Bush the better candidate? Clinton? Bush Sr.? etc? No, they won their respectful elections due to the influence their last name holds and the monetary value of their families.
Always keep one thing in mind. We live in a very materialistic world, one which was most likely created by this ruling elite. If you control the world's funds you control everything. In this day and age, without money you'd surely die. There exists only two classes of people these days. The rich and the poor. The rich consist of approximately 2% of the worlds population yet they control, rather own, 98% of the worlds wealth. The rich continue to get richer while the poor get poorer. It's a vicious cycle with no end in sight.
You also mentioned that these people would be subject to the same laws as we are. You forget that these people MAKE the laws and can do with them what they please. Let's take a look at that bailout. Did you ever study it in detail? The CEO's accountable weren't held accountable. Instead, it was us that were held accountable and forced to pay it. In a just world, these CEOs would have had to fend for themselves but because they are rich they get away with it.
Whether you choose to believe so or not, we are under extreme mind control yet most aren't even aware. The movie 'The Matrix' is about as close to the real world as you are going to get. Most people are 'asleep' while a few of us are awake and doing what we can to wake up the rest. Television, Hollywood, radio, sports, religion and even the educational system are all tools for mind control. It keeps the masses at bay and stops them from forming a united front because of the 'differences' that were instilled between us. Yet, in reality, we are all one in the same. As long as we are entertained, we are content which is unfortunate.
We are but simple pawns in this game of chess. Though we aren't down and out yet, it's going to take a collective push to even contend. The choice is virtually yours. If you're happy with your life and could care less about others then erase this from your memory. Otherwise, do whatever you can to stop this. Even if I'm wrong it's better to be safe than sorry.
'Life's a game and it's not fair, I break the rules so I don't care' is more or less their motto
life as we know it is impossible on venus, but life as we don't know it could be anywhere.
