I parked in the lower level of the university's parking lot. As you come into it, the right side is all parking spots. The left side is a sidewalk with "no parking any time time" signs running down it. I parked in a spot. On Tuesday, there were a bunch of cars parked by the sidewalk, which is illegal. I backed out and bumped a red truck. There was no damage, no dents (maybe a scuff, as my bumper was scuffed), so I drove on, partly because I hadn't done it before.

This morning. I receive a text message on my cell phone in the middle of class. This is it:

"arcticclimber@yahoo.com(the car you hit) So Mr. [my last name], whatcha going to do about that Nissan pick up you hit the other night? Have you notified the owner..."

I try to reply, but he used a bogus phone number. I check my email an hour later, this is what I find:

"ok Mr. [my last name]...what are you going to do about that
maroon Nissan pick-up you backed into the other night?
Nice dent on their passenger door, sucks to be them.

Well, a hit and run now, Blue Ford Probe, License
plate [my number], owned by your dad...."

For the record, I did not leave a big dent, the driver's side was facing me, not the passenger's side, and I don't think a parking lot bump (on an illegally parked vehicle, no less) qualifies as hit and run. My car isn't owned by my dad anymore, either. And I told this guy as much, in a pretty nasty and forceful way... Because this has to be a person I know. But I don't know who... This is his reply to my nasty reply:

"ok, just checking.

I was walking with some friends and not in a car, so i
guess someone else saw also.

oh well

cheers"

I probably should have left a note... Still, this really creeped me out this morning and I don't see why he didn't just call me (my number is listed on my profile at the UAS students online thingy).

Creepy Hodge, but you would be at fault for reversing into a parked vehicle, no matter where it is parked. If no damage was done no biggie, but it would be good to know who this person is, as they sound very strange.

No damage, no problem. I'm not going to wait for however long until the guy comes back (was probably in class). And he did park illegally. There really should be a law saying that if a person parks in such a way as to obstruct another person's way out, any damage done to his/her vehicle is his/her fault.

Yeah, I should have left a note. But man, I need to find out who this person is...

I agree Hodge, thats why the signs are there in the first place and you should be at fault if you disobey the signs. But as it stands, if the car is stationary and you are moving you are at fault. Maybe not completely, but that would be an issue for the insurance companies to decide.

Hodge, it wasn't even your fault, he was parked illegally, you could press charges against him.

That dude bugging you, you should have said, "I'll call my lawyer and have him deal with the person that illegally parked his vehicle, causing the accident."

tell u'r insurace company that they were parked illegally, then it really should not be ur fault or they should take that in to consideration if anything. I had someone at my college one time hit my door and drove off. Luckily someone saw it and was nice enough and smart enough to take down thier plate #, so I was able to get them.

Saying that you hit a parked car is never a good idea, regardless of where it is parked..

lol, I suppose that's true, of course, if you've got couple good lawyers backing you, I'm sure they'll figure something up.

well here in the UK if your parking is an obstruction to other drivers you fail your test straight away, its a major fault. it probably would have been better to ignore this person, they sound like they are trying to wind you up, maybe their stupid enough to think they can blackmail you? but also they probably didn't take down the licence plate of the van, so if they'd said anything you could have just said that they were trying to cause trouble. but by replying you could make things more complicated, but they don't sound smart enough to know how to take it further.....
good luck anyway
