Project Orion came about shortly after world war II as a means to propel large space ships vast distances—as far as Saturn according to the people who worked on this. The concept was simple—explode atomic bombs behind the ship and the resulting force would propel the ship forwards. Here's the long version of it.

I'm not decided... it sounds a bit too dangerous for my taste. But, at least they'll have some better use for atomic bomb rather than killing people...

I think it is a very good idea. And it could work in the estimations of world-class physicists Freeman Dyson and Ted Taylor. The only barriers to its implementation are political.
as far as Saturn according to the people who worked on this.

Well, I think it was "Saturn by 1970" that they had as a kind of slogan, a goal that they wished to acheive. Certainly it is not limited from going beyond the orbit of Saturn.

Yeah the idea sounds good , but my question is about the willingness of the astronauts sitting in that space craft...for they know they will never return...smile.gif

Why will they never return? It is not with the intention of being one-way. The idea is to travel to and from the outer planets.

ok i understand...so they will take a risk to carry one or two nukes with them on their space craft for the way back...i think thats even too risky ...too much shock can explode the nukes when they space shuttle will be blasted for the first time by the nuke...smile.gif

They will require a lot more than one or two nuclear explosives for each leg of the journey. A nuclear explosive can only be detonated deliberately--it is a very difficult task to acheive detonation. I do not think you have any idea how to quantify what kind of 'shock' the spacecraft would receive nor what alleged danger might be posed to the undetonated bombs on the spacecraft itself. So space travel might be risky. What other new developments do you wish to inform us of?

If you're looking for a longer version still, I recommend the book Project Orion: The Atomic Spaceship 1957-1965 by George Dyson (Freeman Dyson's son).

The technology was studied in the 1950s and 1960s in initiatives such as Project Orion, but it was subsequently neglected, partly for political (1963 nuclear test-ban treaty) and financial reasons.
Project Prometheusis is Nasas new plan to use nuclear powered space vehicles, for expiditions to mars and the solar system

yeh exactly nuclear power space ships will be much safer and long lasting...instead of carrying dozen nukes stupidity with so much risk......smile.gif

You have failed to demonstrate that space travel by nuclear pulse propulsion is any more dangerous than travel by other means.
