You heard wrong....The Bible is a 'collection' of books as decreed by the council of Nicenae. There are quite literally 'hundreds' (If not thousands) of possible scrolls and parchments which could be candidates for acceptance into the bible. The council of Nicanae decided which scrolls should be accepted as divine and which not. In other words the bible you see before you today was created by men. In it's current form it's a collection of 66 books (King James Version). The Talmud incorporating the Mishnah and the Gemara is what the major part of the Old Testament is called. The Torah is the first five books of the Bible and was given this special name because the first five books of the bible were made into one large scroll for Rabbi's to preach with. These names have always been ascribed to these books in Jewish orthodoxy.
The names have never been 'lost'. Ben |

The problem with the bible is just that: It was created by men. And yet, some feel there's some kind of "divine" power behind it... while much of it is missing. Would not the "divine" power work to keep it together? ...

That was the argument of the Council of Nicanae. They looked at all the available scrolls and decided that 'God' would influence their choice of what was in and what was out. The result was that many books which had previously been thought of as 'divine' were kicked out and many new ones 'brought in'. When you look at who made up the Council and realise what a load of money grabbing bastards they were then I leave it for the discerning historian to determine their merit or otherwise.
I have copies of Scrolls here which have never been 'accepted' as divine which clearly show Jesus as a warrior and terrorist who urged the poor and downtrodden to rebel against authority. They were quietly dropped out of the bible of course. Ben |

The Nicean Council didn't just sit around and wait for some divine answer to strike them and tell them which books of the Bible were to be included. The Old Testament was a forgone conclusion as it had already been accepted by the Jews as the Word of God.
As far as the New Testament was concerned, books by the original followers of Jesus were first looked at very carefully. Several criteria were used to aid in declaring which books would be included in the Scriptures. (1) The author of the scrolls. As many of those at the Nicean council had studied under several teachers that were not far removed from the original authors, these were accepted first. (2) This is where careful study of the scrolls were done to validate or not to validate them. Many of the books some people today say were ignored by the Council and should have been included are in error. Sorry. What validates the Scriptures is that they do not vary in historical, cultural, and especially spiritually. Scripture was compared with scripture. The scrolls that showed that the teachings did not vary from what Jesus taught or what was taught in the Old Testament were the ones accepted, while other books were deemed either to be forgeries or heresies - books such as The Gospel of Mary, the Gospel of Barnabas ( a real heretical scroll if ther ever was one, the Gospel of Thomas and others were rejected because these books did not line up with known scriptures and that which Jesus, himself, taught. I am sure these men prayed much and prayed often over the scrolls and came to sound conclusions for their day. |

((?)) What was the name of the original Bible?
Now this is becoming irritating. Why do you insist on asking people questions then totally ignore their answers? I have explained that there is no 'original' name for the bible. THERE WAS NO BIBLE UNTIL THE COUNCIL OF NICENAE! There was a collection of scrolls and I have given you the names of the scrolls above. Sheeeesh. Ben |

Well if you're going to ignore someone about these types of issues, it shouldn't be anyone with as much knowledge of the Bibel as Ben.
