O.k. want to show how intelligent you are? Simply refer to this handy list when discussing super-heroes at your next funeral, wedding, cock-tail party, business meeting.

For example I bet you didn't know Jimmy Olsen was Lutheran or Superman and Supergirl were both Methodists. Or how about this, what do The Atom, Firestorm, The Minx, Collosal Boy, Dr. Fate, Shadow Cat Kitty Pride and Ben Grimm,a.k.a. the Thing from the Fantastic Four all have in common? They are all Jewish!

Hey my favourite sounding Jewish hero is Bedlam Bermuda Schwartz. Now there's a woman (other than 22 of course) that any guy would want to meet!

Learning the names of all the superheroes in the marvel universe on an UFO forum...delightful.

Learning the religious persuasion of the all the superheroes in the marvel universe on an UFO forum...strange but fitting.

Being shown that the human 'ideal' is present in all diverse religious beliefs...priceless.

I find comic books and the comic book world a fascinating way to better understand religion.

The comic book world like the Bible and all other great religious works, also is replete with stories of heroes and aliens who have come from away or God to save humanity. You will note there is for example a very strong parallel between the theme of Superman and Jesus. Both are aliens sent to our world to save humanity. Other figures like The Spectre and the Phantom Stranger are simply up-dates of Biblical angels.

Comic stories show how humans use different symbols (superheroes and superpowers) to advance the story of the struggle of good versus evil which is exactly what different religions do. Like different religious symbols, the superheroes may sound and look different, but underneath all basically fight the same battle and have the same values. So whether you like Green Lantern or Superman, in the end, it really doesn't matter. Funny we can't do the same when we talk of Jesus of Moses or Mohammed, etc.

What I also find interesting is that comic book writers unlike their conventional religious counterparts in years gone by who wrote the first original comic book, the Bible, tend to have no problem seeing women as equals and people from all different kinds of faiths and cultures as being capable of having the same positive or negative qualities. The comic book world has in fact transcended cultural or sexual biases and prejudices that still seem to cause misunderstandings in the conventional religious world.

I can not help but ask, what makes say reading the Bible any different then reading a comic book? They both are stories written by humans, inspired by their spiritual beliefs and conception of God or other religious ideas as symbolized through the tales of heroes battling evil.

Both forms of communication are meant to bring hope and idealism to the readers.

Actually I forgot one thing though. The conventional comic book world has not yet dealt with the subject of a superhero being gay. In that sense like conventional religions, they still struggle to deal with or accept this reality. Interesting there is no gay superhero or say a conventional superhero coming out of the closet in a story line. I personally think the conventional comic book world has handled far more contraversial topics. At one point for example the Green Lantern comic books ran a story of Speedy, Green Arrow's sidekick being a heroin addict and they have dealt with a "hero" getting aids.

Superman as Moses...hmm...not so sure.....I would say the two closest heroes to Jewish mythology would be the Phantom Stranger and The Spectre. Of course there are strong parallels between Moses, Jesus and Mohammed and many other Biblical heroes and superheroes.

I think the most unique Superhero of them all quite by accident or maybe deliberately was the Silver Surfer whose powers only became known later on in the series and represents a real break-through from just being your typical good guy superhero to an ambiguous alien presence with the capacity for both good and evil and really one of the first stories to try present faith and beliefs not as two opposite extremes (good and evil) but in fact an inter-mixed concept of both. The Spectre, Phantom Stranger and Deadman are also interesting variations of ambiguity in good and evil and the soul as something that continues after death and has the capacity for good and evil. All the other superheroes are quite one demensional in the sense of either being good or bad. They are all portrayed as having alter-egoes but there is no doubt that they are all good guys or bad guys, not both.

Its also interesting to note how women such as Wonder Women, Black Canary, Zantanna, Supergirl, no matter how powerful they were, were shown to still be vulnerable to certain kinds of emotion such as love that guys like Batman,
would spit at. Imagine Batman or Superman crying. Never. But Wonder Women has cried...so has Black Canary, Super Girl and Zantanna all arguably as powerful if not more powerful then most male superheroes. In fact the only male superhero to be shown crying was Green Arrow when he found out Speedy his side-kick was a heroin addict. All other emotional displays of superhero men have been without tears. As is the case with the Bible, emotion in comics has had quite a lot of difficulty being expressed other then in anger and revenge. Compassion and love has been visited say with Lois Lane and Superman but the idea of Superheroes having a sex life has always been avoided when say Black Canary and Green Arrow were having a fling or Robin and Batman (who I always thought were gay) when they were depicted as competitive with Batgirl and other women.

My favourite superhero its a tie between Spectre and Phantom Stranger, followed closely by Martian Manhunter, then Batman and Silver Surfer.

The worst superhero had to be Matamorpho. I mean the man was full of gas. He turned into gas. How glamorus is that? Imagine being in an elevator with him. No wonder he was always lonely.

But Rube, Superman was a person of great power, seprated from his people by tragedy, sent to help a "lesser" world combat it's evil and help with the cause of freedom, serious religious undertones in his origin.
