Good question, eggnebula.
As far as I can tell, the alien/UFO connection myth to do with the ark started in the early 70s when Erich von Daniken wrote about the possibility of the ark being a nuclear device or a super radio transmitter in his now widely discredited pop book, "Chariots of the Gods?" (1973, I think). I had never heard anything about the ark being "alien-y" before that time. The myth about the ark containing great power, alien stuff, whatever, grew more after the Spielberg treatment in "Raiders of the Lost Ark", 1980, and was probably Ron Wyatt's inspiration to commit what is in my opinion, a hoax. There have been several supposed finds, or almost-finds, of the ark in the 19th and 20th century, all of them certainly hoaxes. I have even heard it rumored that Howard Carter found it in King Tut's tomb and that it was the ark's magic that was the sourcce of the famous "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb". A professor at my old uni who is an actual Egyptologist, among other distinctions, says that in the 1920s when Carter dug King Tut"s tomb, the supposed curse did not involve rumors of ark found - so I think the King Tut Ark is late 20th century myth, grafted onto early 20th century King Tut myth. The recent, notable claim, which I completely disbelieve, to almost getting the ark was Ron Wyatt, who claimed he almost found it in a cave in near Jerusalem, but got run off of private land just before he got it. This Wikipedia entry lists and describes the supposed finders. Here's the Wikipedia snippet about how perhaps the ark is hidden in a church in Ethiopia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ark_of_the_Covenant "The Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Axum, Ethiopia claims to still possess the Ark of the Covenant. Local tradition maintains that it was brought to Ethiopia by Menelik I following a visit to his father King Solomon. Although it was once paraded before the town once each year, it is now kept under constant guard in a "treasury" near the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, and only the head priest of the church is allowed to view it. Most Western historians are skeptical of this claim." Mary |

THIS relates to the topic:
http://www.landoverbaptist.org/news0800/ark.html "...thousands of Landover Baptist's Platinum members wept as the Ark of the Covenant was unveiled last night. The four-foot by two-foot rectangular table constructed of shittim wood and solid gold... "Landover Archaeologist, Bull McZee was called out to the plantation to investigate. He concluded the old coffee table was not really a coffee table at all, but rather the sacred Ark of the Covenant described in the Old Testament. "How it got to New Jersey," he remarked, "God only knows." http://www.landoverbaptist.org/tos.html "The Landover Baptist Church is a complete work of fiction. It is a satire/parody. " Mary |

Landover Baptist is hilarious-almost as funny as the Onion.
Yeah I've heard about the Ark being in Ethiopia myself. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the real deal. |
