Have you ever wondered why most of us find animals cute? Why we find furry creatures cute? I have. Mostly we think baby mammals are the cutest, and I've thought that since we're in the same group of animal, the traits that make our infants cute are what make mammals cute. And we find our own infants cute because nature made us, so that we'll care more about them. The study of animal behaviour makes the point clear that there are triggers that all infants set off to make their parent(s) nurture and raise them. But then, I also think this thing is kinda cute.
Is it the fuzz? Is it huge eyes and small noses? Is it the size? Any thoughts? Added: Maybe this should be in the General Discussion forum. |

sorry its all of the abouve and more.. but not neccesarily all at the same time every time sometimes cuteness is mood definded and sound defines too.. I mean who doesnt adore baby's.. ?. but cover one in fur and well.. nah cuteness dissapears.. but the fox you got up there.. wow soooooo cute.. you just wanna munch him all up.. as for the catterpiller.. soft fluffy cuddly perhaps cuteness is item dependant.. I mean not all fox kits are cute. as not all catterpillers are cute.. come to thing of it yeah i have even seen porky babies that are less than cute,..then again kittnes are so sweet.. but even then someare not so cute.. define scute.. sorry I cant.. now Im asking questions? is it the look that says help me or im hungry .. cuddle me..?... different for everyone maybe!

The fox in the pic above looks both cute and wise, i think. He's got something in his eyes that makes him look more clever than most people i meet during a day...

I was thinking that since we can define beauty, I thought there would be some clear, narrowed down feature or atribute that made us all go 'awww'.
(Beauty is found where the factor of roughly 1/1,6 occurs. The more the merrier) Well, let's take infants. They should be the main reason we find things cute, because if we thought our own children are repulsive, what would become of us? I don't see any more important reasons for finding something cute. So what makes a child a child? What do many children of different animals have in common? Because we are after all looking for a general definition here, and we find many animals cute, not just ourselves. I'd say chubbiness is a good start. Babies are born with big fat reserves to help them grow and get adequate nutrition. And we find chubby things cute. Baby whales, bear cubs, even that caterpillar up there is chubby. But what's the big whoop about chubbiness? When something is husky, I at least consider it to be less than a finely tuned bundle of independence, or having good motoric. I relate chubbiness with helplessness. And helplessness also ties in with parental instinct. We feel important and want to care for something that is helpless. So if I have to say a single defining atribute that is generally thought to be cute, then helplessness is the one I pick. |
