At the bottom of the picture. Those 'tubes' sure look odd. NASA claims they are sanddunes, but that is under heavy dispute by many people.

On the other hand I dont believe they are organic lifeforms as some have suggested. I dont know the scale but the pictures where taken from 200 meters and should show quite a large area. Those 'tubes', whatever they are, must be immense. Some people made wild claims that they look like glass tunnels and proposed they are alien transportation systems..

I personally think a possibility is that they are what's left of frozen rivers or canals. Or streams of hot lava which cooled down, and the cracks or rings in the surface results from the expansion and contraction of the material under influence of the sun.

Or maybe they are sanddunes..

Anyone have a better suggestion? Or at least know how large they are?

RN.....I'd go with current ripples from an ancient stream....or perhaps sand dunes in an ancient river bed....I don't think it would be a transportation system the supports would be much more uniform....whatever the case a very cool picture.

I've seen these before.
I just do not see enough uniformity in them.
There are several pictures on these.
I agree, they must be a natural formation.

Also interesting is that hole. There are other locations with such features on Mars and some of them also have conjunction points of such tubes inside what seem to be large holes.

That makes it likely that whatever they are composed off, at one timepoint or another, those tubes where (semi-)liquid. Ofcourse that doesnt rule out sand. But the way they run down into that hole and still maintain their tubelike appearance gives me the impression that, although the explanation is of a natural kind, it is not as straightforward as simple sanddunes.

I think the features follow the path of what used to be water. Perhaps the riverbeds themselves now pose obstacles against which sand might built up and form sanddunes against, that is highly possible.

I will try to get the other pictures, you will see what I mean. Especially an infrared image was interesting, it appears that the dune/tubes have a different temperature than the environment. Loose sand can pack a lot of air which could hold heat for a longer time, so that could explain it.

It is very pretty though. If space tourism to Mars becomes available Im buying myself a ticket to those dune tube things.

I do not think any of us will be around when tourism becomes available.

Perhaps we could hitchhike a ride with one of those aliens.:ship: :tease:

Here you have more features
http://ida.wr.usgs.gov/display/MGSC_1104/m...1501228.imq.jpg

Here you have a verified sanddune
http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/2004/0...20.R1601731.gif

But this is the most interesting
http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlnasa/pictu...er/DiscMars.pdf

A pdf which explains how the last remainder of (liquid) surface water disappeared into the planet leaving a system of waterbeds behind.

I think that this does make it likely that those features are sanddunes, albeit from a deceiving perspective creating a 3D illusion. However might just have been formed against the dry beds of the last waterstreams on the surface of Mars, before the last bit of water disappeared completely into the surface cracks.

A bit overromancing here, but this is not a science site so Im allowed to do that. Right?.

Certainly appears as you would expect, if it is a sand dune.

I Have to agree with you reallynobody. It does look like a sand dune or a dry river bed.

And if the sanddunes follow the course of old rivers, perhaps they would be a good place for NASA to look for life.

my guess would be current ripples from the ancient stream beds..which followed...looking in ancient lake beds or oceans if they exist would be better but stream beds maybe a place to start
