I am too but I don't know why. Other alien depictions don't frighten me but pictures of greys do. I'm pretty sure I've never seen one in real life, so maybe there is an evolutionary reason for this fear. Maybe they look like one of our ancestor's predators. However, I can't really think of an animal that they resemble.

I have recently begun arguing that they are a subconscious manifestation of something you should fear - so it's no surprise that most folks do -

Ben, I think you're onto something and I think your theory should be tested. Someone could draw alien faces that differ in varying degrees from what a skull looks like (eye size and shame, nose size and shape, mouth shape, etc.,) and raters blind the purpose of the experiment could rate them on how scary the pictures are. Maybe another test would be to see if there is a rating scale for fear of death and see if a high score on that test correlates to a increased fear of greys.

That's actually quite a neat idea

I think you people are making something quite simple sound very complicated and complex... The simple fact of the unknown have the power to make any human scared, the same with the animals. Grays/Greys or even better Zeta Reticuli are different and probably think we look scary as well! After you get used to it you'll be fine. I used to fear but now, I'm quite keen to discover new pictures, drawings and oh blimey! An encounter

They're whole image is disturbing, i have to admit....it's bizarre how something with a weak, spindly body is made frightening just by it's eyes.

Looking at it they really don't look anything like skulls.
I think its because they show no emotion and have emotionless eyes since they are all black. I read somwhere that if we see a human or humanoid type creature that is constantley without emotion it terrifies us. Thats why we are scared of zombie's its a similar priciple. |

When I first seen their faces, I was scared. Now, I am not. I guess I have just gotten used to it. I bet if I seen one in life, I would be terrified. |

For me the real reason, I believe, is because I myself have been taken as well. So that fear most likely stems from that very same reason.

Okay
One day before your born, you mum encounters a spider, or a grey for example, she has that fear of them when you are born, and she carrys that fear as you grow up...whats the likly hood that youl develope the same fear as what she had because youve grown up to believe such thing? Thats how i look at it if you understand that.......But thats not necesarily the same in every case though, just the majority, ans in this case i think this is the case with greys...

I'm not frightened by the grey's faces at all... never have been. It seems that most people are, am i not normal then?
I can't think of something i'm frightened of at all when i think of it, well maybe of loosing someone in my family or something, but not from something in peticular, not even death. I'm very curious about death, because i know it's not the end, that's what i believe in anyway. |

Ha! I'm not delving too deeply into my thesis as I'm saving most of it for the book but my allusion to 'Greys' as being symbolic in the sub conscious with death is only a part of the answer. It is actually representative of the infinite questions raised by birth and death and the fear and awe this instills in us - The mapping on of a skull in the image of a grey is only half the answer - here's the other half -

Oh, BTW.. I have found that if you look at a bright light with your eyes closed so the eye lids are lit up, and then turn away from the light with eyes still closed , you will see what looks like an Alien face. Try it. just dont look at the light at all or it will distort the image

You mean unconsciously? Don't you think there are a lot of people who aren't afraid of death at all? As for me, i'm more curious about death then afraid. I don't think i'm afraid of death at all, to be honest. |

Yeah I think you're very close to the truth - the less afraid of death the less frightening you will find the face of a grey - which in your case seems to fit perfectly.... Ben (It won't be the same for everyone of course and will vary to differing degrees but the 'Overall' effect should be measurable, quantifiable) |
