What do you all make of the accounts of Herodotus, Josephus, Marco Polo,...etc., concerning Dragons?

In some of their writings/stories, it seems as if they speak about dragons as if they're common place.

Kind of a "matter of fact" tone.

I was always under the impression the idea of a dragon came from early findings massive lizard bones (dinosaurs). Course you could always go
with Jung's theory that most of every common day monster was the result of subconscious fears manifesting themselves.

I've heard both of these hypotheses, Dante, and it's curious that if either is true, that the different cultures came up with basically the same physical creature. (but, of course, with different temperaments)

See, I’ve got this penchant for researching a lot of the occult and i absolutely adore demonology. But what i found interesting is how a lot of cultures produced similar myths. Most cultures have variants of unicorns, mermaids, dragons and vampires and lycanthropes. When i was in high school, this posed a bit of a debate for me. It wasn't until one day in history when it was mentioned that native cultures in Canada and the U.S. practiced masked theatre, just as the Romans had. After a little bit of a discussion with my teacher, i found out that there may have been many treks between the continents in early history and pre-recorded history, which impressed the hell out of me as it was a viable explanation to the question of multiple myths occurring over the world.

It's what I tend to accept today anyways. Course, I’m open to dragon's existing if it posed so relevance to my immediate life.
