For some reason that I cannot explain I found Apocalypto disturbing and couldn't finish watching it.

I thought Pan's Labyrinth would be kiddie or cheesy, but it turned out very well. Really enjoyed that one.

Yeah, I felt that way too when I first saw the previews, but I guess that falls under the category of don't judge a book by its cover.

For you guys that liked House of the flying daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, The Promise I reccomend a movie called SHINOBI-Heart Under Blade. I believe it was released in Japan in 2005.

Its set in 1614 Japan where the Towkugawa Shoguns create a plot to pit two Ninja clans the Koga, and the Iga to fight each other to wipe each other out to make it easier for the Shoguns to finish off both clans since they fear the two clans fighting skills.

Very cool movie!

I also like HERO.
