I live in Tokyo so everythings fine. Here the quake was about a "4"..which we get a couple times a year, and about 3-10 "3"s.. you get used to them. When I first came here I sort of freaked about the earthquakes..now I just think "oh man I hope my tv is ok" haha.
It was quite a powerful one though.. 10 people died.. its rare that someone dies in them. There was also a tsunami warning for two areas but nothing happened..so.. well..life goes on. The simoutaneous typhoon bothered me more.. |

Well..it turns out that the worlds largest nuclear power plant is.. yes.. built ON A FAULT LINE. That they didnt know about. Apparently the fault line responsible for the earthquake the other day runs RIGHT UNDER the power plant. Great...

veta....if memory serves most of Japan is on a major fault....its all part of the "ring of fire" its similar with the west coast of the US |

Yes..Japan is part of the ring of fire..but thats a broad abstraction. Its not one fault everyone.. there are numberous faults. For example the Kansai area (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe) actually doesnt have many fault lines at all, on reason the 1995 earthquake took everyone by surprise.

V...my apologies...I didn't mean it was one fault going through Japan....but many faults through most of Japan meaning most places are on a fault zone....and Kobe is not to far from a conjunction of three compressive subduction zones.....and also liquifaction caused a great deal of damage.....and it was well known before 1995 |

ANd saying there is no falut under then plant is stpuid. there are faults everywhere in Japan. And the 100 barrels of spilled nuclear waste that became 400. The 1.5 gallns of radioactive water they upped to 15 ballons then 1.5 tons. That sees supcious to me ,like a coverup. 63 evets up from 50, but don't worry its no threat to anyone or the enviroment, baloney! Or the fact it is still leaking radition today. They screwed up and need to be held accountable for deliberaly missing everyone around the world. It took them a day to announce the radioacitve water spill and the fire in the trsnformer near one of the 7 nuclear reactors.

ABY.....its not their fault the quake caused a nuclear spill.....its like blaming the Mayor of new Orleons for Katrina.
one other thing what does missing everyone around the world mean? also it depends on the level of radiation....I've worked at a place that had 50,000 drums of radiactive waste removed....and at nuclear reactor decommissionings....it all depends on the amount of radiation not just the radiation itself |

Well..basically..it was a coverup. Nuke accidents are also covered up here. They arent major, and they arent covered to hide some deep dark secret..they are covered up because no one wants to lose his or her job.

Recent research suggests that typhoons and earthquakes are connected. The extreme low pressure of a typhoon suddenly relieves downward pressure on land areas that it passes over, allowing certain types of earthquakes to happen more easily. This is a safety-valve preventing larger earthquakes from happening (so I guess we should be grateful for typhoons/ cyclones).
Do Typhoons Cause Earthquakes? Earthquake Research Institute, Tokyo Cyclone/Typhoon Links: Tropical Cyclone Forecasters' Reference Guide MTSAT Satellite Data Animations at RAMSDIS Online And while I'm at it, Volcano links: Eruptions in Japan Global Volcanism Program By the way, it looks like the damage at the Kashiwazaki-Kariya nuke plant is much more extensive than first reported: * Fire at an electrical transformer facility. * 1,200 liters of water containing radioactive material leaked into sea. * About 100 (later upgraded to 400) barrels of radioactive waste knocked over in storage facility. * Duct knocked out of place in major vent; possible leak of radioactive cobalt-60 and chromium-51 from five of the plant's reactors. * Water leak inside buildings housing all seven reactors. * Malfunctioning of water intake screening pump at two reactors. * Blowout panel knocked down at turbine buildings at two reactors. * Oil leak from low-activation transformer waste oil pipes at two reactors. * Loss in water-tight seal at reactor core cooling system. * Water leaks from diesel generator facility, burst extinguisher pipe, burst condenser valve and filtration tank. * Broken connections and broken bolt at electric transformer. * Loss of power at control center for liquid waste disposal facility. * Oil leaks from damaged transformer and magnetic transformer facility. * Oil leak at reactor water supply pump facility. * Disrupted electrical connection at magnetic transformer facility. * Cracks in embankment of water intake facility. * Air and oil leaks at switching stations. * Land under parts of plant turned to mud in quake-caused process known as liquefaction. Report on Earthquake Damage to Japan's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Facility |
