One day, during the 1920's the President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge and his wife were taking separate tours of a Government farm. After observing the hen house Mrs. Coolidge asked the guide how many times a day did the rooster mate with the hens. He replied, "Oh dozens of times." Mrs. Coolidge was observed raising her eyebrows as she said, "Please tell that to the President."
Later, the President was given his wife's message. "Same hen every time?" he queried. "Well no, sir." came the reply. The President smiled and said, "Please tell that to Mrs. Coolidge." This incident created a belief known as the Coolidge Effect. This theory generally holds that men are far more likely than women to desire a variety of sex partners. There have been some experiments conducted in an attempt to prove this phenomenon. It was observed that when a male mammal is introduced into a cage with a sexually receptive female, he will copulate with her with vigor. After a period of time he will begin to lose interest, even though the female is still willing. Finally, he will reach a point where he has little inclination to copulate with her. However, when the female is removed and replaced by a new female, the male will immediately begin enthusiastically copulating with her. This has been tested using Rams. It was observed after 4 or 5 copulations the Ram will lose interest in the female. When a new ewe was introduced the Ram's interest was immediately renewed. This was continued to the 12th ewe with the Ram showing the same pattern of behavior as before. Similar results were established with regards bulls and cows. The researchers tried to fool the rams and bulls by disguising the females, with which they had mated, with canvas hoods and coverings and masking their scent with other smells and then reintroducing them. The males were not fooled. As psychologist Glenn Wilson observed, "These male animals know where they have been and do not like going over the same ground again." While it is generally presumed that humans have a greater capacity for intelligent action than any of the other mammals the question remains: is it a biological necessity, a compulsion, or simply an urge for men,who are in a committed relationship with a female, to seek extra sexual affairs? Also, how true is the belief that an erect penis has no conscience? And finally, what can a woman do in order to minimize the threat to them from the Coolidge Effect? _____________________ "Nothing is more noble, nothing more venerable than fidelity. Faithfulness and truth are the most sacred excellences and endowments of the human mind." Cicero |

For every beautiful woman -there is a man tired of fucking her...
Sorry for being crude...this is indeed a very complicated subject. Now, monogamy has very little to do with monogyny; and should have less. Monogamy is only a mistake because it leaves the excess women unsatisfied and unprovided for. But apart from this, it provides for posterity, and it is generally recognized that this is the crux of all practical arguments on the subject. But the defect of monogamy, as generally understood, is that it is connected with the sexual appetite. The Practical Wisdom of the Astrologers has made this clear. The Fifth House (love, children) has nothing to do with the Seventh (marriage, lawsuits, public enemies). ~Crowley

This theory generally holds that men are far more likely than women to desire a variety of sex partners. This theory is flawed because it is based on social constructs. The experiments given in support are equally flawed as well because they attempt to compare animals with humans. A female animal is generally only interested in copulation during certain times of the year and for the purpose of conception...once she mates and conceives, her interest in having sex is over...but until she does, she will mate as frequently and with whom she pleases. I'm sure that had they taken your female and placed her in another cage with another male...whilst placing a new female in the other cage...that the original female would have been mating with a new male partner. So, the experiment only really demonstrates the traditional interest in male sexuality. Additionally, as opposed to animals, a human female cycles once a month and can get pregnant at any time of the year...what's more...she may also have sex for pure sexual pleasure and not for conception only...again, just another stereotype fostered by a society structured to cater to males. Females...outside social controls...are JUST as promiscuous as males..and the female drive to both procreate and have sexual pleasure are just as strong, and if not stronger in some respects, then the male drive. The infidelity noted in males is nothing more than the products of social stereotypes, constructs and controls...it would be the same in the absences of that in females..and, indeed, we are beginning to see as much in liberal, more equal societies. |

i don't want to sound shallow or anything but thats how its is with me. But i don't think that this experiment puts love into the equation. Thats what keeps men from going for other women.

Dear Tu Tu,
Thank you for your enlightening response. I especially enjoyed the statement, "The infidelity noted in males is nothing more than the products of social stereotypes, constructs and controls." How insightful you are. This reminded me of Chapter 8 in Mark Twain's book, 'Letters from the Earth.' http://www.online-literature.com/twain/let...om-the-earth/9/ To quote a portion, "Man is without any doubt the most interesting fool there is. Also the most eccentric. He hasn't a single written law, in his Bible or out of it, which has any but just one purpose and intention--to limit or defeat the law of God. "...The law of God, as quite plainly expressed in woman's construction is this: There shall be no limit put upon your intercourse with the other sexually, at any time of life. "The law of God, as quite plainly expressed in man's construction is this: During your entire life you shall be under inflexible limits and restrictions, sexually. "...from the time a woman is seven years old till she dies of old age, she is ready for action, and competent. As competent as the candlestick is to receive the candle. Competent every day, competent every night. Also she wants that candle--yearns for it, longs for it, hankers after it, as commanded by the law of God in her heart. "But man is only briefly competent...After fifty his performance is of poor quality, the intervals between are wide, and its satisfactions of no great value to either party; whereas his great-grandmother is as good as new. "There is nothing the matter with her plant. Her candlestick is as firm as ever, whereas his candle is increasingly softened and weakened by the weather of age, as the years go by, until at last it can no longer stand, and is mournfully laid to rest in the hope of a blessed resurrection which is never to come. "...(woman) has the high privilege of unlimited adultery all the days of her life. That is the law of God, as revealed in her make. What becomes of this high privilege? Does she live in free enjoyment of it? No. Nowhere in the whole world. She is robbed of it everywhere. Who does this? Man. Man's statutes... "...Now there you have a sample of man's 'reasoning powers,' as he calls them. He observes certain facts. For instance, that in all his life he never sees the day that he can satisfy one woman; also, that no woman ever sees the day that she can't overwork, and defeat, and put out of commission any ten masculine plants that can be put to bed with her. He puts those strikingly suggestive and luminous facts together, and from them draws this astonishing conclusion: The Creator intended the woman to be restricted to one man! "...You have heretofore found out, by my teachings, that man is a fool; you are now aware that woman is a damned fool!"... I don't remember the name of the wise man who was consulted by the Greek Gods to answer the question as to who enjoys sex more, the man or the woman. When he answered 'the woman' he was struck blind by Athena (I think). I liked the experiment my girlfriend asked me to try to prove this. "Everyone knows there are more nerve endings in the fingertips than most anywhere else on the body," she said. "Now stick your finger in your ear and wiggle it all about." And then she asked: "Which feels better your finger or your ear?" I also enjoyed your post Dani. Funny you should quote Crowley on Astrology. You must have read my post regarding my belief in it. Personally, I would not consider marrying anyone unless Astrology indicated we were compatible. I believe Astrology, with a fair degree of accuracy, can determine if you are going to be an introvert or extrovert by nature. I also believe it can determine whether it is your nature to be monogamous or not. My rule of thumb about most everything is: When in doubt, don't. I realize my belief in Astrology may strike some as foolish and may dampen their respect for my thinking ability. Astrology has been a great asset to me and in my personal world it is a respected field of study. Besides, I have learned not to be concerned, affected, or even interested in what people think of me. ________________________ 'I don't believe in marriage. As a male I'd say there is some truth to this, I know it sounds bad. Ive never actually cheated on anyone, but I could definatly see if I was put into a certain situation I may be tempted, even though id say i really wouldnt want to.
These days though, gee im happy to listen to music! Dang i hope my sex drive comes back!!!! |

Among male humans, I've begun to see it as a TAUGHT "instinct." Everywhere you look (tv, books, society...) you see the majority (not all) of men cheating, playing, and using women. This can easily be observed, although not consciously understood, at a young age. Males can grow up with the assumption, whether sub-conscious or not, that it is acceptable, maybe even expected, to behave in such a manner. Especially if a boy grows up with a cheating father figure... How many marriages end due to infidelity in this day and age, anyway? Although I feel that most of these kind of men do not realize exactly why they feel the need to do this (making it sub-conscious, therefore being able to consider it a valid "instinct"), I think that there is usually a reason for them placing themselves within that type of attitude.
Then, of course, there are the mind-fuckers that like to define "cheating" differently. I am going to use a person experience, if I may... My ex left me for another woman he had wanted to get back with for months. He claims to love her (to her face, anyway) and while I agree he does care for her on some level, this "love" does not keep him loyal. Despite the fact that I was just the girl to occupy his time before she came back, he still finds me sexually attractive and will therefore cheat on her with me (along with other girls). However, he considers cheating a bit differently... We can make-out, fool around, give and receive oral, but cannot have sexual intercourse. Why? Because he claims THAT would be breaking his loyalty promise to her. I know he cares for her in some way, but his interests cannot stop at only her. Great way to beat around your conscious, huh? I also have to vouch for the side of human nature. Regardless of love or deep feelings for someone, we cannot control who we desire sexually. Love and lust are completely seperate things. You can easily be in love with someone (and even be loyal) but still covet elsewhere. And who are we to fight our primal human nature? Men generally cheat and play the field because it is an image created by society, whereas woman tend to be overly emotional, needy, and loyal due to the same factor (in most cases). If a woman really felt like it, she could easily set aside her conscious and morals to dip her hand in the cookie jar, so to speak. If men can do it, women should learn to as well!
