I just picked up a Bounty hunter Tracker 4 metal detector. I plan to Search around the end of the Oregon trail maybe find coins or whatever.
Anyone goof around with this hobby?
Opinions?

yep i did abit of that in the army but not looking for treasure . A buddy of mine has one also and i went out with him afew times looking for stuff ,we had afew finds but not much. Its best to go off the beaten track away from the tourist areas that you know people havent been walking passed for a very long time ,slightly overgrown places away from roads and walkways , because you will pickup junk and rubbish otherwise. there should be a setting on it to change the frequency so it doesnt pick up modern metals like aluminum and so on. Get a old can of coke and play about with the settings until it dosent beep at the can of coke but still beeps for coins like copper and steel ,it should still beep for gold and silver.
Try some old battlegrounds and some old english or french incampments. im not sure of the laws on this in the states but generally the law says that it depends how deep under the ground it is, if you have the right to take it or not / in europe if its a certain distance under the ground the goverment is ment to get it and you only get a cut of it like a finders fee.
So im not sure of the law where you are you may want to take a dog with you if you find someting so it would just look like your walking the dog at a glance. Read afew local books about civil war areas or trading posts in your vancity im sure you will get afew musket balls or buttons or even a old spanish sword still incrusted with native american blood lol who knows.
Im not sure if the native americans had much metals if any so the oldest thing you could find would properly be european in style but im not sure i think thay had abit of gold, in ireland you could find anything from the last few 1000's years, send it to me and i will post you a cut of whatever i find lol

Yeah, I have had several over the years, I've found a lot and learned a lot.
Bought my first one back in early seventies, a Relco. Then it was a Bounty Hunter.
Bounty Hunter use to be by PNI industries out of Tempe Az.
Their first model was an outstanding one. They have since sold out but the new owners kept the old name. They are still a good unit though, just not a top of the line anymore.

One of my favorite places to go is beaches. An old swimming place is great. Old parks are good as are the yards of old homes. Look for where they hung out their cloths.

Your unit I am sure has descrimination settings. If you want to be able to find a gold ring or coin you need to set it so that you can still hear a nickel when you pass over it. If you can not hear the nickel, your settings are too high.

Happy hunting.

Also, if you wish to optimize your finds, search in a grid pattern and keep your coil as close to the ground as possible without bumping stones or anything. This will avoid missing spots.
