At a French army barracks open day on Sunday, a soldier in a hostage rescue demonstration loaded his gun with live rounds instead of blanks and managed to shoot seventeen people, including five children. Only two were other servicemen. Fortunately there have been no reports of fatalities. This is puzzling because live rounds give a recoil when fired which is not felt when firing blanks, as only a small mass of gas and not a bullet is ejected out of the barrel in the latter case.

They are saying that the culprit is not mentally unstable, but if he is not, how on earth could he not know that he was firing live rounds as soon as he fired the first shot? The irony of it is that they are reporting that there was someone acting as a "terrorist" in the crowd and therefore the soldier was firing into the crowd at the "terrorist", but he hit all the bystanders. Blanks would have concealed such poor marksmanship. Although if everything was done properly except for the wrong assumption of blank ammunition, it probably would have involved a burst to the head of the "terrorist" actor which would have killed him.

It is typical for most sub-machine-guns and modern rifles to have a capacity of thirty rounds, so it is likely that he shot all or nearly all of this. It is improbable that he would have fired only seventeen bullets to cause seventeen injuries to seventeen different people. A seventeen or thirty round burst would not be part of an accurate demonstration, so the whole incident seems so completely implausible that it baffles comprehension. But maybe it was just dramatized for the crowd as shooting terrorists in close proximity to bystanders is probably only done at close range but blanks themselves are dangerous at close range (even lethal at point blank). They probably impounded all video, so for those who were not eye witnesses it will probably be a long time before we will actually know exactly how events happened.

Even if they were blanks am i right in think they shouldn't have been fired at anyone without one of those yellow attachments on the end like the british military use in training...??
