Okay, I know this sounds a lot like a night terror. Maybe it was but I've had them before and they were never like this. Last night my husband and I had just said goodnight and I rolled over to go to sleep. Suddenly I couldn't move, but I felt like I was moving. They only thing I can relate it to is a puck on an air hockey table. I felt like I was floating a few inches above the bed, being pushed back and forth over a cushion of air but I couldn't move any part of my body. I tried to scream but I couldn't. Then, all of these horrible images started pouring into my mind like someone was feeding them in there. Horrible, grotesque, monster-like things. I can't even remember what they looked like exactly because it was so terrible I made myself forget it even as it was happening. I thought I was going to have a heart attack from the fear. The entire time I seemed to be drifting around and was surprised I hadn't bumped into anything. At some point I think I thought a hand was grabbing my wrist. Then I could suddenly move again, and I was on the bed where I started. I was too scared to go to sleep for a good while. When I finally did go to sleep I had unusually vivid dreams. I've had night terrors bad enough that I couldn't move before, but what was with the floating feeling? It was so terrible. I hope it never happens again.

Well it doesn't sound like a night terror to me nor does it sound like you've actually had one. A night terror is when you wake from a nightmare but are not totally conscious. You can hear the real world around you but are unable to see it. You are even able to communicate though it usually doesn't make much sense as you usually are describing what you are seeing so outsiders have no clue what you are talking about. I use to have them 3 or 4 times a week when I was younger so I'm almost positive what you had wasn't a night terror nor have you had one before.

In all honesty, it sounds like you had something like those "falling off the bed" dreams where you think you are about to fall off your bed and you wake up jumping to find you were in the middle of your bed the whole time. Not exactly like that but similar. I could very well be wrong as dreams are a tricky subject.

What were you doing during the day? Did you watch anything? Are you stressed or suffer from anxiety in any way?

you were probably half way between dreaming and waking,i've had some odd experiences, while falling asleep and on waking. One of my old posts i mentioned that i used to wake hearing a knock on the door ,only to go to the door and no-one was there, and i was the only one that heard it,as it was the knocking that woke me.it hasn't happened for months now.

I'd go with K-Wurz's explaination. My son had night terror's and they are exactly that, you wake up screaming staring at nothing.its not nice to see.

Lol, I Had The Same Thing As You Today MD, I Thought I Heard My Doorbell When I Woke, But Nobody Was There.
As For The Floating Sensation And Such, I Would Put It Down To Sleep Paralisis. I've Had That Before And I Thought I Was Being Abducted By Aliens. And Because I Knew About Aliens, I Kept Thinking About Them in My Head.

Its Just Mental.
