I know it's a silly thought, but I think a major event like an asteroid or a comet would in moderation and at the right time do some good for this world. On the whole.

I would probably pick:

- alien invasion (not so much invasion as a mass-arrival)
- asteroid (aimed of course at a particular angle and um.. place).. not mine lol

What are your favourite major (not quite extinction-level) events that you are looking forward to, and why?

I wouldn't mind experiancing an alien invasion, just as long as they don't start war. I think it would be nice if we could live in a world that is shared with animals, aliens and humans. No other unknown life form would ever fuck with us. rolleyessmileyanim.gif

The strongest creator of "team spirit" and a sense of "brotherhood" comes form working together to overcome a threat to the common purpose those people have. The trouble being, it they don't win....

My ideas?

- Intense radiation hitting the Earth producing less then what is needed to kill life by a long shot but still causes social unrest due to weakened health and well being
This situation takes many years to take effect. It could hinder a developing race that has yet to learn a defense against this

- Some one in the world obtains drastically more advanced technology of any kind upgrades a small area of Earth substantially but does not share it.
If someone said "I have the secret to ..." but didn't share it beyond a portion of the world, it could cause endless jealousy and destruction.

- Falling global oxygen levels
Nuks are the most troublesome here. They destroy huge amounts of oxygen. On a longer term note, lack of oxygenating plant life could bring this about.

- Radiation bursts
We get hit with these all the time. I have seen the night sky light up like day dozens of times in flashes that last less then 1/15th of second. Such is caused by intense radiation either form a large nuclear device having been detonated on the Earth or a very powerful blast wave from things like exploded stars that hit the Earth. Even a hiccup from our own sun can cause this. So far most have not been that intense, but if they were powerful enough... One time I was walking down the street at around midnight circa 2004 when a wave hit. For a moment I wounded why it was day time but it lasted for just a moment. As soon as it was over, many of the street lights went out and I had to walk in darkness.

Anyway, there are a few ideas for you beyond standard things like "aliens invade", "Severe temperature shifts", "a comet or asteroid" and so on.

global thermo-nuclear war.

j/k... it wouldn't work out.

hmmm... how about a new disease? one that would force humanity to coexist in order to survive and find a cure. its random, infiltrates all levels of society, etc. nah... wouldn't welcome it.

oR...

Zombie Invasion. thats the one.

I'd love an actual alien invasion. None of that "Peaceful visitor" crud, but a full-out Hollywood type alien invasion.

I mean, the nations of the world would be forced to unite, because it's work with those who were your enemies for the last fifty years or be enslaved. Of course, we could still kick their buts. A planet is a lot of space, and their military might not be prepared for ours. They could kick our buts, but we could do the same to them. Make one of their ships crash, then steal it and make more for ourselves.

So yeah, I have to say an alien invasion would be sweet. I'd be on the front lines fighting them too.
