I just found out tonight that atomfilms sold out. The new owners, MTV and Comedy Central, have taken what used to be a brilliant site for enterprising young film-makers, and turned it into just another stooooooopid comedy video site.

I mean, my heart is broken! This site used to have sci-fi, horror, drama ... all kinds of short, independent films from young, undiscovered film-makers. It was great! And now it's dead. I can't believe it.

I mean, do we REALLY need another joke-video site? Atomfilms used to be SERIOUS, for REAL filmmakers. Not video: films. It was ART. Now it's just another pile of waste on the internet.

Yes, I used to go on there all the time some years back. I have seen some good short films by student film makers. Also, I loved "angry Kid". I never figured out how they made it. Just claymation in front of a green screen or if it was some kind of foam puppet. YouTube is the same way now. I mean, it used to be home videos and student films and art projects. Now everytime I log on, Some mainstream actor is on there telling everyone how good their films are and then plugs their new project. I guess someone has to pay the bills though.

The nice thing, though, is that as some parts of the net become corporatized, new frontiers of innovation are always opening up. For example, in my search for films, I came across half a dozen other sites that carried a lot of films as well: not as good as Atomfilms once was, but hopefully someday they will be.

The problem with Atom Films is I think they had free space but charged for a larger bandwith. But starving students and film hobbyiest dont want to spend hundreds of dollars. So I guess they just found it to be more profitable by selling it to MTV. I bet they got a lot. They basically made a name for themselves and made a killling in a bad economy. Maybe they will take the money and reinvest it.
