Intesting read that DisproveU.i think the lights maybe natural...some believe these lights occur in siesmically active area's,not always at the same times as earthquakes..bit like a pressure valve for the electircal energies the earth creates.

The seismic stress explenation might be it. There is a lot of quartz in Brown Mountain. Quartz does have electric properties when stressed,

I wonder if they ever took EM readings in that area and compared them to other areas with no lights seen?

DisproveU, I don't normally offer up experience stories, though this is one I don't mind. I live in the Smoky mtns (the foothills) My father had often told stories of these lights, and I had seen them in the distance in the forests. I had one encounter with one of these things driving back from Nashville. Highest point, dark clear night. The thing came zooming down the mountain side, enough for it to catch my eye. It came directly in front of my camero, which was making good speed itself (smile) I just had the oddest reaction to it. I smiled and said "well hi!" It curved off my "hood" and zoomed off, skyward. I couldn't tell you in a million years why I reacted that way. I wouldn't have been so friendly if it had decided to tailgate, ha ha. Spirit, swamp gas, dunno. It was of this earth I am sure. I have no fondness or love of anything I would think Alien, ever. Strictly a home team girl, always. B.

BTW, the car was sold a few weeks later. It caught fire and burnt. The electrical wiring was shot. (Had nothing to do with my driving, ha ha, I swear) I always thought that odd, though couldn't prove a connection or even the event happened. It was 2 am, alone, no other drivers around. I was moving G forces myself that night to get home.
