I disagree with the conclusion that the FDA has come to, but considering that people made stem cell research illegal, what did we expect?
Even going back and making stem cell research legal, there's going to be some repercussions, and the fact that pharmaceutical industry is going to do their damnedest to hinder stem cell research... we got problems.

Do you agree with the FDA here?

Personally I think the FDA is more and more for seeing big profits to pharmaceuticals and big busness first and our safety second.
    Of course they do.
    Built into the system.
Costs big bucks to do research.
Not worth doing if they can't protect their investment.
Going to be that way for a long time.
Thats just part of the reality money.

They don't want to hinder it.
They just don't want it to be cheap.

Society has a lot of evolving to get to Star Trek the next generation, where they have done away with money.
If we didn't regulate them with legislation, corporations would become more powerful than govs.
And turn civilization into their cash cow with no reprieves.
You have to give them protection to make return on investment though, or jobs go away and technology stalls.

It is a tough tightrope to balance on, cause greed and power corrupt.

Tell me Bart, why does the very same medicine that people must take for various ailments(prescriptions) cost so much when the very same thing used for animals and pets can cost vastly less at times? If I recall there was a TV program about that some years ago.
It is about big profits many many times over and above 100% from what I can tell.
To be honest bart, I'd like to see the honest numbers in total cost and % of actual profits. I have a hunch they would be 500 - 2000% for some medications...maybe even higher.

SD, i'm glad you brought those points up... and thank you all for your input.

bart - unfortunately, you are absolutely spot on. that balance is at the moment, is swayed heavily in favor of the fda, can we agree on that point at the very least?

i suppose when there is this much profit involved, one should come to expect the quibbling over the fringe stuff. but i would definitely like to see the 'checks/balances' theme applied here.

IMO - the FDA needs to be blown to smithereenes and regrouped with a balanced group of docs, naturapaths, homeopathics and chemists. They are WAY too powerful and care nothing for the health of the nation...it's all about the money. Kick backs and bribes are us.
