apparently the authorities use a computer package that searches communications via the web for terrorist related material and communications that even have the word 'terrorist' in it.maybe even this paragraphis gonna be scanned for relevance.are we being constantly observed.how long before we have cctv in our homes.how long before the orwellian society.

The same algorithm that searches a document for a word can be applied to any data transfer that is not encrypted. That is digital internet as well as voice data on telephone lines.

To the best of my memory on this in the news it was only approved for overseas communications on telephone conversations.

The net being virtually unregulated allows anyone with the resources to search whatever. Consider yourself in public view when doing anything that is not encrypted. Consider encrypted communication good until hacked.

Further it was not approved for use by any other agency for any other purpose. But you must be aware that we live in a technological world where lines are reguarly crossed. Bounce an invisible infrared lase beam off a window and you can pick up the vibrations of conversation in a room.

Every public streetcorner had cameras monitered by his secret police. Hospitals without resources re used dirty needles leading to a huge aids epidemic in the children while secret police had extravigent budgets.

Wherever power can be abused it will be. Oversight is the primary mechanism to curb such abuse.

Problem with this is that terrorists dont send messages like "Ok, Ive got the nitrate, Im putting the bomb in place tomorrow".

They have code words. "Yeah, tomorrow is going to be a crappy day because I got my credit card bill today".

There have been systems like this running for a while ... one of the well know ones is WEB-BOT.

It crawls the Web and makes predictions ... initially used for stocks. But has made other predictions regarding 9/11, D.C. sniper case and Columbia disaster.

I can see this technology used in the fight against terror.

You need to read The Puzzle Palace: Inside the NSA by James Bamford. That explains everything. It's been going on for years. What I don't understand is why all of a sudden all the facts about about electronic surveillance is new and shocking. All this crap has been known.

Conversation can only get you arrested if they can show intint leading to conspiracy to commit.

Keep it light like a joke and you can say anything you want. Nothing will happen. You would not even know it if your conversation were being scanned.

Start talking about commiting a crime and make plans for dates and actions and you could be arrested for conspiracy. Say anything you want as long as you are not making it sound like a plan to commit.
