North Korea said Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test, setting off an underground blast in defiance of international warnings and intense diplomatic activity aimed at heading off such a move. (AP Graphic)

    now the question is:
    North Korea or Iran first.
Attacking one (with or without UN approval!) could provoke the other.
we do know one thing though, North Korea does have nuclear weapons
this has been proven to the world

Your thinking of attacking them is amusing!

now the question is: North Korea or Iran first.
Why not let them be? Why must we always try to police other countries.

    i never said attack anyone

attacking one of these countires (if not both) seems inevitable and this event will likely shift hostilities from Iran to North Korea (hence my statement)

Anyways some of the following is not necessarily my opinion, although some are, just random musings, as I have been thinking about this all morning from both sides. I just posted them to create some debate/discussion.

I keep hearing the term "Nuclear free Korean Peninsula"

Personally I would like to live in a "Nuclear free North America" as it seems one country has Nukes and lots of them.

I saw the DRNK Ambassador on CNN this morning and he said the US and UN should be congragulating DRNK for their ability to co this.

In a way he has a point as it takes great knowledge to be able to get to the stage where they can do a test.

To me the world is just the same old place as it was yesterday, I did not notice any change like that US Ambassador to the UN said there would be.

Then I hear from a guest or expert as they call them, that NK received the know how from Pakistan. I am not sure if I believe that or not.

There are now 9 countries with Nuclear capabilities (soon to be 10- Iran maybe) so what gives the other 8 the right to complain? If they can have them, why not NK or Iran?

The US foreign policy over the years, George Bush invading Afghanistan (somewhat justified at the time, but they should of finished the job their first), invading Iraq illegally, threatning to do the same to Iran and Syria, yalking tough and saying lies about Fidel and Hugo.

In my personnel opinion when a country that is the enemy, hears things like that, from a superpower, maybe they think having nukes is the only real deterrent to stop a US invasion, missle strikes etc and maybe that is why Iran is or is not headed that way?

Kim Jong is a quack, but really there are many other leaders that are just as bad, but he happens to run a country that has nukes, so that is why he gets the attention he seems to enjoy.

    Solutions to this?

I would say the US needs to let China reign Kim Jong in. Blockades and sanctions won't really work as NK mainly does all their trading with China and South Korea. SK may honour any sanctions, but will China? Even if China were not to veto it, would they still honour the sanctions? I have a feeling "probably not".

The short term solution would be to "bribe" Kim Jong with food and money. Then the long term solution would be to continue with International aid and have the UN or China rebuild and upgrade the infrastructure so eventually NK can trade with other countries and become better off and self sufficient.

I am not sure what resources or technologies they have to trade with other countries, but the world can help them.

But I do not think Kim Jong will go along with that.

The only other solution and I don't really wan't to see it unless it is a last resort.

Would be for China to somehow get Kim Jong to leave power and live in Exile somewhere, maybe in China? Have a new government put in ,with elections to be held within a year under the observation of the UN. Then the rebuilding or building can start.

I think reunification should wait until the country gets on its feet. Personally I do not see the need for reunification anyways.

But the very worse case scenario would be for China to forcibly remove Kim Jong from power militarily and have NK become a Chinese province or under their control until elections could be held under the observations of the UN.

The people of NK will be better off once Kim Jong is gone. Provided there are free and fair elections soon after. If this were to happen, China, Japan, SK and a lot of the world would help the people of NK and help rebuild the country.

But I think it is in China's corner now and any of the scenerio's I mentioned above could happen. We just have to wait and see.

    that's a good argument canadian

if anything, i would say Iran and NK don't need nuclear energy (note: weapons and electrical production) simply because they have little to no need for it

in the case of Iran, they justify having nuclear capabilites (primarily enriched plutonium) for nuclear power plants, yet they only have one real city, everything else are just minor villages practically
not only that but the Iranian leader is an obviously violent and unstable person

North Korea is a bit more justified, they have more urbanization than Iran, yet they have bigger problems to face than nuclear power, such as fixing their food shortages
many nations (includeing the US) have offered to give food in exchange for NK to stop their nuclear program
it's obvious Korea is bent on allegedly giving it's people nuclear power rather than giving them food

    i feel it's obvious that
these countries don't need nuclear capabilities, they have no need for it and are too unstable to be trusted with it
