Default Croatian teenager wakes from coma speaking fluent German

Hmmm, was her interest in learning the German language spawned by a past life as a German...now the coma brought back memories of her fluent speaking it from that life...or...did she speak good enough that perhaps the coma better kicked in her more creative side of her brain thus helping her language skills enough to speak it fluently?

A 13-year-old Croatian girl who fell into a coma woke up speaking fluent German.

The girl, from the southern town of Knin, had only just started studying German at school and had been reading German books and watching German TV to become better, but was by no means fluent, according to her parents.

I know that by the end of 1st year university level French, I was supposed to know all of the French language grammar. Like, all of it. The only thing that would stop you speaking it fluently would be vocabulary, and practice.

I don't really know what this means, though, as the story makes it sound like more of a miracle than something one can think through.

Ive heard of people waking from a coma speaking a different language before and it reminds me a bit of foreign accent syndrome. Its really interesting. Always wondered if it could be a language or accent from a previous life?

Reminds me of the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose, where she started to speak languages after getting possessed. lol By Legion.

I think the sub-conscious 'part' of the mind can learn at an exceptional rate, so I would make an assumption that while in a coma the subconscious was in such a state or connection where it picked up and finished that particular task she was engaged in...Without any feelings or distractions or outside interference we deal with every day the sub-conscious mind quickly finished this task and it was set in her mind...

In a similar way, like when a problem cannot be resolved, then you sleep on it and the answer comes to you the next day...

Yes you are absolutely right. Its the same phenomena. Its a fascinating subject. There is so much we still do not know about the capacity of our brains to develop linguistic skills, i.e., can we aquire it from listening even though we never use it and simply store it in our subconscious?

Could it be a certain part of the brain with very little stimulation can be activated to master a language quickly?

Could it be our brain has part life memory?

There are of course many theories and the fact is all the neuro-sciences and psychology still know very little about how the brain works and what it is capable of.

What is fascinating is we know people have come to these language skills from aquired brain injuries, strokes, and viruses striking the brain.

Its also associated with the phenomena of demon possession and it could be there is something related between the phenomena we are discussing and certain alleged demonic possessions where the individual begins speaking a totally different language.

What is truly fascinating is that when the person can't speak the whole language fluently but instead just gets an accent, linguists are able to pin down the accent precisely to someone of another language.

The wierd thing is though the person speaking say with a sudden French accent in English can't speak a word of French and yet their accent mimmicks personally the very sounds a French person would make speaking English.

There are documented and taped recorded cases of people speaking ancient and modern languages other than their own.

Wouldn't it be fascinating if you and I can store all kinds of languages in our brains and not even know we have done that and could one day learn to retrieve them. Or what if we could learn to stimulate the part of the brain that would then allow us to speak a different language. Would it be only one, more than one and is so which ones?

Whether its past life language stored or present life sub-consciously stored no one knows yet. They know the parts of your brain that govern language and there's a pretty good idea of how we go about developing our language skills and the steps along the way but this phenomena remains a big mystery. If you google it or yahoo it, its fascinating the stories you can find and the kinds of theories coming about.

Man I would love to speak every language there ever was. Man if I had such power when I was younger and dating I would have been able to charm women all over the globe...then again possibly insult them too....uh forget that lost thought.

I agree Mika-El, it would be great to speak every language! Ive been looking this up like you suggested, its strange how sometimes personalities change for people along with the accent or language. Even favorite foods change. This is fascinating stuff.

I have to admit that this is amazing. Normally, comprehension comes easier then speaking a new language. This should give everyone a breath of hope that we are only as smart as our ability to retrieve and regurgitate information from our brain. As a multilingual person, it was more difficult to pick up alternate languages as an adult than I did as a child. So speaking fluently after only absorbing the information is short of a miracle.
