i ahve a question, can a domestic pet, like a cat or dog love its owners back.
im talking love as in a person loves their pet, or do the pets just hang around you because you feed them? |

oh no no...pets love their owners as we love them
My pup and I definetly know this to be true.... you see animals have emotions too, and when you give love you recieve love...its not about feeding them.......its about loving them, showing you care...and they are "devoted" to you they become the bestest friends....they can keep secrets...LOL hugs goddess |

I know my animals love me just as much as I love them. As goddess say's, it is so much more than just feeding them. My animals show me more love and affection than anything else in this world, their total devotion to me is awesome. As you can tell, I love my animals so very much.

Pets can love their owners just as much as the owner loves them (in some cases even more), the links below may shed some light on the subject (sorry about slipping in the last link  )

Yes they can.
I have a really small dog and he always jumps up onto the sofa and sits next to me and watches the TV with me. All pets are great friends to have. |

If you treat the animals who live with you with love and respect they will give it back. Animals are just as capable of love as humans. I wouldn't recommend grilling them on it though. Do you really love me Sparky?!!?? Or are you just playing me for treats? Their actions should speak louder than anything. [pup]

A bit too much love sometimes, as they are both 20 Lbs and fully clawed... sometimes I refer to them as my two 'lil bastards'! |

They DO love their owners. My cat always knows when I'm coming home from work or school before I even get to the porch-the neighbors' cats (who we feed) too, they know I'm gonna pet em, and always run to the porch when I enter the yard.
My dogs were the same way. God I miss them! The truth is, most animals (mammals, anyway) are just as compassionate towards those close to them as we are. Mothers and offspring particularly. Apes even mourn their dead! Chimps and gorillas have been seen sitting with the body of a deceased counterpart for days. Yet people still say we're not related. |

Thats such a random combination. Did the hippo beat the croc. Hippos are meant to be the most aggressive animals, although crocs are pretty bad too. Pets defiantely love their owners, I mean they go mental when the owner comes home fro being out all day. They cant wait to see their owner, they hang out for it. |

Some people have debated that animals are simply loyal because we feed them but this does not explain why animals will rub against you, lick you, sleep in your bed, or exhibit acts of affection and tenderness.
I was part of a study that observed female mother pigs seperated from their piglettes. At first we tried to explain it as something else but were able to observe and catalogue thatthe mother pigs cried and went into depression when their piglettes were seperated from them. It has also been proven by zoologists and animal behavioural specialists than animals can and do become depressed when other animals in their pack or family die. Closer to home many vets will tell you that animals most certainly become depressed when their owners die. Animals have also been known to react when their owners are sick or in emotional turmoil. It is not just dogs and cats, it is all kinds of animals who have formed relationships with people in zoos, i.e., elephants who apparently can be very affectionate and loving and remember people years later. So yes I believe it and not simply because we humans are projecting our feelings or beliefs on animals. I think there is something more then just them appreciating us feeding them. I had a pet crow that would peck my ear and I knew it did it out of affection. |

I think that domesticated animals can to a certain degree. But wild animals can't because that would go against the fundemental law of nature, survival.

I don`t belive animals can love only sentient life Is capable of love. They may need us or be fond of us or even look at us like property but love?
I don`t believe so. Now maybe dolphins and chimps yes but dogs and cats no. |
